I have wanted to get into filming some shooting. I have a Nikon D7100 that takes nice videos. Will the bang of a firearm damage the microphone? I'd hate to damage the camera. I it worth the money to buy an external mic?

Good question. I almost never shoot any video with my camera. I wouldn't think the SPL from shooting would damage the mic, but I don't know for certain. I've seen plenty of videos taken of shooting using various DSLRs, and have never heard of a case where doing so caused any damage to the camera's mic.
I have a D7100, along with a D800. Both very nice cameras!

I've also seen many videos but don't know if they change cameras or anything. I really don't want to damage anything in the body so I may get a el cheapo mic to use to give me peace of mind. I have been filming on a Nikon S4000 and may just keep on with that camera. The quality is only so so with it though.
By the way, the 7100 with the 35mm f1.8G lens is AMAZING! |

I have taken some video while shooting rifles. The camera has always been behind the shooter, so behind the muzzle and muzzle blast. I have not experienced any problems.
