Is there a laser sight available that is practical to use for shooting deer in broad daylight? I want something I can mount very close to bore axis on an AR for precisely placing shots at very close quarters. Budget around $200 max.

An optical sight will be much faster on target than a laser. Plus you need to check your states regulations before venturing out with a laser sight attached for hunting any game animals.

Looks like the Crimson Trace green unit is the only choice, excepting similar from Viridian. Judging from youtube, it should work well enough.

This is the rangefinder forum, just FYI. Do you wish to forego using any form of sight (optical or iron)? I am missing something.

It is somewhat common where I'm from to start young deer hunters out with a .22 Hornet. You have them take only neck shots. I have a son who wants to kill a deer, but he hasn't a father who wants to bother with setting up a Hornet. I do have an AR-15, though. What with the adjustable stock and all it seems well-suited. I started him with an airsoft AR and now he is getting used to a 22lr version.
Trouble is the difference in point of impact and point of aim at very close ranges. I am not expecting him to be able judge variable hold over when excited by the presence of a deer less than twenty yards away. Also, I would like to be able to know that he is on target before I let him shoot. So, that's the missing part. I'd like to mount a laser on a railed gas block for very short range neck shots on deer; done by very young shooter with close supervision. |

Why not mount a burris fastfire (quality low-priced option) or eotech? I child hunting shouldn't be taking shots over 100yds (if that - I'm going to limit my kids to 50 or less by the stands I hunt with them in), and a holo-sight like one of these would get my vote. Essentially it IS a laser, just projected on the viewing screen and not the animal.

I've found unless you've got dim lighting conditions, it's really tough (at least for my eyes) to pick up a laser dot projected on foliage and other highly textured surfaces in the daytime, and you need to quickly locate it to place it on the deer. I second the suggestion to get a reflex red dot or holographic sight...or illuminated reticle scope instead of you want an illuminated dot.

I looked at the Eotech, because of the 7 yard aiming point, but then there is still the variable from 7 out to about 20. Some of those videos on youtube looked kind of promising, especially with the green laser.
When you say it was hard to pick up, were you looking with naked eye or through a scope? I'm thinking the laser would show up inline with the vertical crosshair as he looks through the scope. |

Both. On my AR, I have both a Lasermax laser on my gas block rail and an illuminated reticle scope. I have a lot of difficulty picking up the laser in the woods during daylight hours whether I'm looking for the dot through the scope or not. And, if I'm looking for the laser through the scope, where I can see my point of aim clearly through the scope, why would I want to try to acquire the laser dot? Why not just use the reticle? It has to be early in the morning, late in the evening, or night before I can see the laser AT ALL. Maybe my eyesight isn't as good as others and it would be different for you; I don't know. What I can tell you is for me at least, a laser is totally useless as a primary sighting device between the hours of 7:30 am - 4:30 pm during the fall when I'd be deer hunting unless I was hunting beneath heavy tree upper story where it's really shady. In addition, I would never want to rely on projecting an illuminated dot onto skittish animals who are often running in groups with multiple sets of eyes, when lighting conditions allowed the laser to be useful in the first place. Just get an optic with illuminated dot and you accomplish exactly the same goal with none of the disadvantages. IMO, lasers are for self defense weapons in low light conditions or, where legal, night hunting.

Lasers have a definite place, I am not certain this is it.
Just my opinion. Having used lasers quite a bit, they require training, lots. And pulling the trigger introduces much more variation in point of impact than can be offset by a precise point of aim - especially for a new shooter. |
