Hello I am a complete newbie.
I am getting a Noreen 50 BMG to play with. (mainly before they are banned) The company offers a 0 or 20, 30 MOA slope base to come with the rifle. I have no idea why I would want one over the other and customer service was not that helpful they recommended the zero but wanted to make sure. I will mainly be shooting 500 to 1000 yards, I have the capacity to go to 2000 yards but it takes some coordinating so 95% of the time will be out to 1000. Initially I will be getting a SS fixed power or a Millett 6-24x50 LRS or something like those until funds increase and I really understand scopes more. Thank you and any links on information of understanding scopes and set up would be much appreciated. Rick

A lot depends on the amount of Elevation adjustment you have on the scope. I agree that the 20 MOA covers most scopes at 1000. However, if the base is not well aligned to the bore horizontally you may run out of windage adjustment at the longer ranges as the geometry of the internal adjustments limits one adjustment (Windage) as the other (Elevation) nears its limits. Picture a tube within a tube and you can see that as you near the limit of the Elevation you have less Windage adjustment.

With a 750grain A-max bullet at 2980fps (conservative number… the hornady amax 750gr 50BMG was tested with a 24 inch barrel, yours is 34 inches… you will get a bit more oomph, but hard to say how much until you chrono it), you will need 64MOA to hit 2000 yards with a 300 yard zero. Only 19.5MOA for 1000. A SS 10x scope will get you to 2000 with a 20MOA mount… you will have about 70MOA useful adjustment. Do not trade quality for magnification. Spend as much on a scope as you possibly can, but a 16x fixed would be very good for your purposes. A SS 16x will give you very high quality and unequaled value.
There are solid bullets out there specifically designed and machined for extreme long range shooting. You may better the numbers if you load or get some of those loaded for you.
