Former roommate of mine, his father had one. Let us shoot it a few times. One of the "fastest" on target I've used. We used to dove hunt a lot. His was a field grade… very nice. I wish I had one.

I have used one, like Dan said they point quick, buddy still owns it. He wouldn't sell it an I didn't insult him by asking.

I have a matched set of 101 Pigeon Grades in 20 and 12. They were both made in the 70's. They are well made with tight actions and nice triggers. They are taller than the Beretta action and don't carry as well.

I had a 101 Trap (single barrel) when I started trap shooting. Before my first shoot, I'd swing it up and marvel over how fast it swung. It was lighter than most O/Us I'd handled, which I attributed to being a single.
When it came time for my first shoot, that light weight bit back. I wondered how those guys shot so much in one night. Later that evening as I waited for another round, someone started to walk by, then turned and asked "Is that a 101?". I said yes. He replied "Hurts don't it?" I guess they had a reputation for that among the trap shooters- at least the singles. Add another barrel and don't shoot 100+ rounds in an evening, and they are great guns. |

I do like the Beretta better but have been carrying SxS doubles for several years now. They carry far better than a stack barrel. They are very shallow in the action and are easy to grasp with one hand.

http://www.winchesterguns.com/products/catalog/category.asp?family=020C Its pretty interesting that they moved production back to Belgian. The field model looks like it would be a real nice gun for blasting some birds! |

I'd have trouble deciding between the Field or Pigeon Trap grades.

Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.

Hey Lynn, unless I was shooting trap doubles exclusively, I would look at a single barrel like the BT-99. A long day on the trap fields and a heavy gun takes it's toll. I shot 8 rounds in one day with several different guns during a class. The single barrel guns are sweet. I won't even get going on release triggers for trap!
You can also still get Remington 90T's for a fair price. They were made by Kolar and are very good guns. Hunter, the Browning SxS guns are still reasonable on Gunbroker if you want an SxS. I have to add that I do a lot of one handed carry in the thick grouse and woodcock woods. That is why I have switched over to SxS. In more open pheasant country I will still carry my O/U bird guns because of over the shoulder, two handed or cradle carry.

Doug, after buying 2 new Red Labels I can't afford a used H&R single shot, but I hear what your saying.
One of these days I would like to pick up a nice SxS though. |
