Good day,

has anyone reviewed or had any first hand experience with the New Monarch 5 scopes. I am especially interested in the 3-15x42. I have a Super slam 3-15x42 and a Zeiss HD5 3-15x42 and am now looking for a third and noticed Nikon now offers one.  I contacted Nikons technical department and asked them about the Monarch 5 and was blessed with a very disappointing and vague answer that sounded like it was read right out of the sales brochure.

They could tell me nothing technical at all and gave me a song and dance about how "People depend on our glass to see the world on a daily basis so you know that the quality is something that is very important to us". That is all well and good but that does not help me make a decision. Regrettably no one in my local area sells Nikon I cannot compare first hand. Anyone out there have any experience with the new Monarch line either the 3 or the 5.

Thanks Doug

Vague and disappointing answer from a Tech department on their own product should give you all the answer you need.

They are tech people probably have no people or sales skills.

Yes I agree! but they should at least be able to tell me something about their product. I don't think they even knew what I meant when I asked what level of the market the glass was designed to compete in. Honestly if the glass is on par with the super slam I would probably buy one or three just to standardize.

I am a Tech/Sales guy for my company and have been for many years . I agree that there are many in the technical field that are a bit lacking in the people department. Big Smile

Why not just buy 3 super slams if you are happy with them?

Generally, most companies instruct their employees to not answer "is it as good as..." questions when it pertains to optical quality.  It is a can of worms for them and in their place, I would try to get away with a vague answer as well.

They are decent scopes and pretty good for the money.  I have generally warmed to Nikon scopes a little more in recent years, although I am still not a huge fan of their BDC reticle.

Whether they are better than the Super Slam or not is a hard call.  I think that Super Slam has a slight edge with optics (and it started out as a more expensive design), but the Monarch 5 seems a little more forgiving for eye position.

Weaver's EBX reticle is just as silly as Nikon's BDC albeit in a different way.

Honestly, with hunting scopes, you may want to consider the new Razor HD LH.  It will be a bit more expensive, but it looks like a cleaner and more flexible design. In low light, both of the reticles offered in the Razor HD LH are going to be more visible than Nikon's or Weaver's.  Honestly, I think the new Razor hunting scopes and Leica ER5 will make things complicated for Conquest HD.

Lastly, if you are considering a 3-15x42 in the Nikon/Weaver price range, you should also consider SWFA SS 3-15x42 with the center diamond reticle.

Thanks for the great answer! I do like the superslam I actually have 8 of them but there is a noticeable difference between it and my HD5'S. I also agree that the BDC and the EBX are both silly. I was hoping that the Nikon would fall in between the two. I am not familiar with the SWFA SS you mentioned I will have to do my homework on them as well as the Vortex.
