I was at Cabelas today comparing the NF SHV to a VX-6.
The VX-6 had a reticle I had not seen before. A 3-18x50 CDS-ZL Firedot Windplex . So I researched and it's new for 2016. Here is the link to Leupold's site with info: https://www.leupold.com/hunting-shooting/scopes/vx-6-riflescopes/vx-6-3-18x50mm-side-focus-cds-zl/ The reticle was very interesting since it was a fairly standard duplex but had windage hash marks. The elevation knob is exposed but has a small button on it that locks it in place. You push the button and you can dial elevation. It will not let you dial down once it hits the zero lock. Honestly, I liked it a lot. It seemed like a nice setup for a hunting gun where you might take a shot longer than your normal point of aim and you could quickly dial for the shot and then return to zero. It is pricey but I can see that being a very cool setup for dialing in long shots and using the wind hash marks. Overall, I really liked the scope but comparing inside the store I'm not convinced it had better glass than the SHV I compared it to. But it was indoors and it's hard to really judge them that way. And I'm not expert on judging glass. Both scopes were easy to get behind but the VX-6 is quite a bit more compact. Anybody else, looked at or have an opinion of this new reticle and CDS ZL dial?

Thanks CT.
The pic does not show the button on the turret that locks it. It was IMO a very good idea since it locks the turret and it's very easy to see if the turret is set to zero. One thing I did not test was if it will twist more than one rotation. And, if so, what's the total MOA adjustment. I'm putting whatever scope I choose on a 300WSM Browning ABolt so I really won't have to dial much for any shot I would be willing to take on a game animal. But I do have access to a 1000 yd range locally and have considered shooting it there to work on my shooting skills.

Nightforce SHV F1 4X14X50 w/ MOAR 30 reticle. I just got mine Friday, it's not an NXS but, it's pretty badass. I looked and considered the 3X18X50 VX6 with FD4 and CDS. Glad I didn't settle for the inferior product. They aren't widely available but one place I know of does have them in stock but I can't say because of the competitor thing on here.

I did like the SHV I was looking at. But it had the IHR Illuminated reticle and I did not like it.
The 4-14 they had did have the MOAR 30 reticle and I liked it much better. I have a buddy with two NXS scopes with the MOAR reticle and have always liked them. The SHV is high on my list too. I have to pay off my suppressor that's in jail first so I've got time.

No, this is a new SHV. It has Zeroset, first focal plane, center illumination and an exposed elevation turret. It just came out.

That Firedot has really caught on. I love mine. Made me rethink my opinion of illuminated reticles.

Side focus will be nicer on targets. That Fire Dot with windage hashes looks like a reticle most could actually use. Being able to click up for open areas and both see and feel that you remembered to click down afterward is convenient.
If you want to see which has better glass, you're going to have to take them home and compare outside in varying ambient light and conditions. |

I know about the new F1. Honestly, on a pure big game hunting gun I'm not that concerned with SFP vs FFP. I'll always have my laser rangefinder with me. The rest of the F1 specs are very nice and the focal plane will not affect which one I decide on. So FFP is more of an expense/bonus to me. The scope I choose will be going on a Browning A-Bolt II White Gold Medallion in 300 WSM. It's stainless with the pretty wood and a octagonal barrel. So far it appears to be very accurate for a sporter weight barrel. I'm not a big aesthetics guy when it comes to firearms, but this one is really pretty and the Leupold would look better on it than the SHV. Either will look better than the Viper PST 6-24 I had on it before. That thing looked like a telescope on it.
