Have a couple of older S&W revolvers in magnum calibers . What would be a good weaver type mount for them . I'll have to drill / tap anyway , but want something that can handle the recoil . Budget is a consideration , but not to the point of sacrificing quality . Have a couple of Aimpoints gatherin' dust & might as well use 'em . 65 yr old eyes have problems aquiring front sight in less than perfect light . Am used to red dot as all my Bullseye guns have them .

If it is stamped aluminum, it is garbage, don't buy. If it is at Wal Mart for $20, it is garbage, don't buy.
Look for something long enough for your application but not so long it makes mounting a challenge. Buy something good, never skimp on mounts or rings. |

I've experienced something along this subject and I can tell you that I had problems with my 6 x 32 screws shearing off under the vicious recoil of light weight magnum revolvers. In one case my scope went sailing off the revolver during a shot. I solved the problem by going with 8 x 32 screws and by putting 3 rings on some of the rigs. Dont go with aluminum.
If you get a gun smith involved I would recommend that you don't use someone who doesn't have experience with heavy recoiling handguns. SSK Industries, Magnaport, and many others know what they are doing in this realm, but a lot of local gunsmiths don't have the expertise. These guys would also have good advise on which scopes handle recoil the best.
