Hey guys,
So I notice that most people who are really into optics never bring up the Canon IS (Image Stabilization) binos. Is Canon that bad at making optics compared to Zeiss, Swarovski, Vortex, Nikon, etc..or is that they market to a different crowd? or is it that most people have no need for IS because they don't use binos with that much magnification? or that most of you use tripods? Any opinions welcome. |

That market is primarily boaters, law enforcement, and bird watchers and amateur astronomers with deep pockets. They are quite good. But, as with all products with electronics bells and whistles, are susceptible to moisture and battery replacement. The 20x60 Zeiss is a fantastic tool, and the optics almost beyond compare. But, because it uses a mechanical stabilizer, it is not nearly as good at stabilizing as the Canons.

one other question.
Aren't the 15 * 50 binos made liek 20-30 yrs ago? Has bino technology not changed that much for that long?

I bought my wife a Canon IS 8x binocular a few years ago. She now will not use anything else. The reason I got the IS is she said binoculars made her head hurt. I figured the "jitter" might be the cause of that, so got the above mentioned binocular. She has not had a binocular induced headache since. She uses a binocular for bird watching, spotting varmints, observing critters in the trees surrounding our property(raccoons, squirrels, etc). Sometimes spends hours observing. She really and truly will not even look through any other binocular I have. I, too, like the IS. I've never had a headache, of any type, but when faced with the question "with jitter or without???"… I'll choose without. Price, to me, is reasonable for advantages gained.

Ditto on the wife! When I used to have my wife come out to take a peak through one of my scopes, I could usually get about 3 minutes out of her before she would say, “It’s cold out here.” I once had her look at the Pleiades with a Conon 15x50. About an hours later, I was saying: “Can we go in now; it’s cold out here!”
Qpalzm: Twenty years ago, the Technostabi by Fujinon, and other instruments of similar design, were just becoming accepted. Thirty years ago, the Stabi-Scope—very expensive, even back then—was about the only real contender.
The Stabiscope used/uses a Gyro to stabilize the optical chassis and stabilizes VERY well.
The Technostabi, Canons, Nikons, etc. operate on separate servo-motors that rotate optical wedges to do the job well enough to please the average observer.
The Zeiss 20x60 S operated mechanically and required no batteries. The optics were incredible (today it costs about $8,000) but it could not stabilize as well as either of the other two technologies. |

WJC,
Thanks for the info..but a bit too technical for someone who knows very little. Are you essentially saying that yes..technology has changed little?

With a $5,000+ plus price tag for the Stabiscope, the average guy was staying away from it … in droves. Thus, the servo-motor jobs made IS more affordable. But, then, the technology will keep changing. |

The Stabiscope is Fujinon's first and best IS binocular. You can get your answer on a servo-motor faster by looking it up than having

Ah. I see what you're saying now. So the current Canon IS (Canon 15* 50, 18 * 50) is actually a worse version than what came out 20-30yrs ago because the original was too costly?

No! It’s not WORSE! It’s just not as good. There's a difference. However, it does not cost nearly as much and is MUCH more ergonomic. It’s not a matter of better or worse; it’s a matter of different. |
