Is anyone familiar with Weaver's so-called "European" line of 30mm rifle scopes? As far as I can tell these are not the same as Weaver's "Super Slam" scopes, but I have no idea how similar or different they are.
I only heard of them today, and the Weaver European 1-5x24mm 30mm Illuminated German #4 caught my eye, because its price (on sale) is between that of the $180 Weaver 1-3x20 and $280 Nikon 1-4x20, but includes an illumination feature which those two scopes don't. Any idea how it compares in optical and mechanical quality to those two? Of course, that 30mm 1-5x is bigger than those two one inch scopes; supposedly it is 10 inches long and weighs 15 oz. So in physical size and weight, maybe it is more comparable to the $360 CMR4 1-4x24 or $330 Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6x24, although I'm not sure exactly what those weigh. The $1000 SWFA HD 1-6x24 is notably heavier at 22 oz, but presumably much higher quality. |

Nobody knows anything about these scopes? They don't particularly look like the Super Slam Euro-Style, nor any of the other lines Weaver shows on their website, including their low-end (Made in China) Kaspa. I did find this 2014-07-30 press release with some specs and a MSRP of 399 Euros (about $535 at that time) on the 1-5x24 and 3-12x56, and 459 EUR ($615) for the 3-15x56. That puts the MSRP vaguely in the same ballpark as Weaver's Classic V line, more than the 40/44, but less than the Grand Slam or Super Slam lines.

sham, hogwash, garbage. the scope, that is.
three ago i needed a scope for a .375. I tried that Weaver and the Nikon African 1-4x20 with the Germ 4 reticle. Nikon won by a mile., I kept it and got the beast, Weaver went on fleabay. Good riddance. The problem with it was glare and stray light control, shorty and fussy eye box. don't get the weaver, get the nikon monarch 3 1-4-20 germ no 4 reticle, GREAT PRICE, AWESOME SCOPE |

I was looking at these scopes and found very little online. Looks like they are made for competitor, but they are also for sale on Ebay. I was looking for a low powered scope that went down to 1X and did not have turrets.
Anyway I bought the 1-5X and mounted on my Ruger mini. Here's what I found so far: Optics seem pretty good, my eyes are not great so I could not tell any difference between the European and an old Nikon Monarch. Suffice to say the clarity at 5X is fine for a Mini. I did not have any glare or eye box issues. All of my shooting was at a range so I didn't try any quick mounting of the rifle when I was actually shooting. I like the illuminated dot at level 2 even during the day, it is definitely easier to pick up than just a black dot if the target area is dark and you're in a rush. What I also like: 1 - Comes with "bikini" rubber lens caps. 2 - The brightness control goes from 1 to 6 but between each number there is a stop where the illumination is off. So if you like shooting at level 4 you can just turn the dial a small amount to either 3-1/2 or 4-1/2 and the illumination is off. Another small turn and its on. There are detents at each point so you don't have to look. 3 - If you pull the windage/elevation knobs out they will freewheel so you can set them to zero once you're sighted in. So if you need to make adjustments you can do so with the knobs. Also it's easy to see if somehow they are out of whack (like when knob-turning-friends handle your rifle). What I don't like: 1 - As I mentioned the knobs will freewheel when you pull them out. They are held in by spring tension but it is very little, so I was holding them in when I was making adjustments. I'm not sure it was necessary but I would like to see more tension. Also the clicks were mushy, but they functioned OK. 2 - The competitor site shows that the inner crosshairs illuminate, but they do not (maybe just mine?). Only the dot iluminates, which is fine for me. BTW they do have a lifetime guarantee but you need to send in $15.
