Hello folks,

I have a riddle for ya. I thought i'd be able to decide on optics for my new rifle on my own, but i'm having a hard time getting my hands on good glass to look through. I've dug through this site a lot and found some great info. It helped me narrow it down to two choices, although im open to other options near $1k and below.

Ive got a Sako a7 roughtech heading my way in 243. Talley high mount 1 piece rings and bases so clearance wont be an issue. Rifle will be my do it all hunting rig. Ill use it for deer to about 200yds and varmints 500yds and in. Weight is not an issue for this rig.

My top 2 requirements are good clear glass and decent magnification for those groundhogs that like tall grass and wiley coyotes that stay way out there. Illumination would be nice, but not needed. A company with decent CS would be a plus too, as i've only had two scopes that havent had issues over the years. A Redfield and a Leupold.

The two that i've found that seem promising are the Sightron S-tac 2.5-17x and the new Razor HD lh 3-15x. I'd appreciate any experiences that yall have had with these two scopes, as well as any other that you think would fit the bill. I could stretch the budget to $1250, but less is more(ammo )

I'd decide on my optic before I bought the rings. You don't need bight rings for a sub 50mm objective in most instances. Plus you'll be happier with the center axis of the bore and scope closer in alignment. Also will be more comfortable to get behind.

Might take a look at the NF 4X14X50 SHV F1.

Neither. etown, New York! Not too far from Lake Placid.

I have yet to order the rings, but i'll be getting the talley's . Just need to figure out which size.

Can you elaborate on Leica? I've heard the name, but have no experience with them.

Leica.   The Rolls Royce of German cameras is making scopes.

You can get the scope without having to mortgage the farm like you would if you bought one of their cameras.

I first handled one of their cameras 46 years ago at Boyd's Camera Shop in San Antonio and I still can't afford one!!

I have a LAW 6.5 Creedmoor with a Leica ERi 2.5-10 X 42 in low Talley Lightweights. I don't know how that translates to your Sako, but the lower the better.

Welcome from Oswego neighbor. Been thru there many times.

Razor HD LH is a very good option. It is not as good as the Leica, but not as expensive either. I have a 3-15x42 and it is excellent.

Most other quality scope makers put larger objectives lenses on scopes that have magnification that extends up to 15x or so. There are exceptions, of course, but if you want a bit more magnification than 10x with a 42mm objective, your options among quality scopes are a bit limited.

Is the 3-15 adequately clear to pick out ground hogs to 300yds in high grass?

If you can see a groundhog with your eyes at 300 yards, you will be able to see the little feller through a scope.

I grew up in an old Victorian house right smack across the road from a big old hayfield that was maybe 250 yards long down to the fence at the bottom end of the grade. If I could see the woodchuck from the porch, I could sure as hell see him through a scope.  I used to shoot them with iron sights out to 100 yards.

adequate - as much or as good as necessary for some requirement or purpose.  Sounds good until some adverse event dramatically changes the requirements.  If you are certain you will never exceed a particular set of requirements… adequate is good.  Increased requirements -> increased cost… almost always.
Opinion,untempered by fact,is ignorance.

Where I live both tall grass and groundhogs are in short supply.  That having been said, I do not think you will find an optically better scope in its price range.

Since I do not have any problems aiming at chainlinks that support the target plates at 400 yards, I suspect that seeing an animal the size of the groundhog should not be much of an issue.
