Since I haven't hunted bears I can only speak from the perspective of being prepared to defend myself during a grizzly encounter. For that, I carry bear spray in an accessible spot on my pack. To me, it's a pretty comfortable backup to a bolt-action .308 with a 3-15 scope that, by default, is set to 3X.
If I was actively hunting black bear I'd prefer a semi-auto .308 AR with a 1-4 or 1-6 scope (awesome cheek weld with low rings on the SS models I've mounted). I'd take the semi-auto over a larger caliber bolt-action. While you can never take any animal's reaction for granted, I've seen black bears within 50 yards 1-2 times a year for 30+ years and have never had one not flee, except for one sitting on the banks of the Smith River one morning as we floated by. Generally, they seem shy. But then there are the ones that get into stuff. My friend showed me what a black bear did to a metal garbage can he had bird seed in. That bite would HURT.

Reaction time is a factor...

Hey, "Clyde," where will you be hunting black bear? I'm thinking they'll be rather scarce there in Nigeria.

Very entertaining thread but here is the question: Did erinis0112 get his bear?

It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed. TR
