I just received my new Schmidt and Bender 8x56 Klassik and I’m a little confused on the eyepiece dioptric focusing.

When I focus on my subject by turning the eyepiece to bring my subject in to focus, I lose the sharp and crisp reticles.  Conversely, when I adjust the eyepiece to get sharp and crisp reticles, I lose the focus on my subject.

How do I get both items to be in focus at the same time?  I would like crisp/sharp reticles that is placed on a subject that is in focus as well.  I cannot seem to accomplish this.

You should absolutely be able to see a sharp image of both subject and reticle.

1) The only reason for the diopter adjustment is to get the reticle sharp.

2) What distance is the subject ? The scope most likely has a factory set parallax at 100 meters.

Look at the blue sky an eye-wink at the time, adjust the focus until the reticle is sharp. If you look through the scope for longer periods your eye will adapt and start compensating. If you achieve a sharp focus on the reticle don´t touch it again (unless your eye-sight changes)

Place a target at various distances and see where the focus is lost. Normally it should be optimal at 100 meters.

I was focusing on a subject at around the 50-60 meter range.  Regardless where the diopter is set, I am unable to get a crisp image of the reticle AND a sharp image of the subject at distances under 100 meters.  I've been playing around with subjects in the 40-80 meter ranges and the reticles and subject will not play nice together in terms of crispness/focus.

Thank you

Before you send it back, do some testing at longer distances as well. It would be interesting to see if the phenomenon is constant.

The subject and reticles are solid at 100 and beyond.  The scope is unable to have a clear subject in focus with sharp reticles at distances <70 yards.

I would verify with the seller of the scope that the factory parallax setting really is 100 meters.
If so, I would ask to have a look through another identical scope (your scope could be a lemon and there may be another with a wider span towards shorter distances)

Another option is to get S&B to modify the factory parallax setting, normally a painless, easy operation but if it´s done by someone else than a S&B tech it would violate the warranty.

I have never had any problems with the fixed german/austrian scopes I have owned, I would have noticed as I often did target-practice at 50 meters.

Edit: Have done a quick test this morning with two of my fixed scopes and a fixed loaner (Kahles 4x, Zeiss Jena 6x and a Swarovski 8x) all of them were within focus at 35 meters.
