So just picked up a Weatherby Ultralight in 338-06 and thanks to Supertool, have a new scope for it. The rifle comes with Leupold standard bases with the dovetail in the front and the standard windage adjustable bases in the rear. No rings.
While I can see an advantage of using the windage adjustable bases to make any significant windage corrections instead of using the scopes internal adjustments, but seems like a lot of moving parts to get aligned compared to the Talley Scope mounts I typically use on my hunting rifles. Is it more difficult mounting a scope in Leupold standard bases/rings? Requires the use of alignment tools to ensure the rings are in line? The price of the standard rings and the Talley scopemounts are a wash, but just curious on how difficult the Leupold option is and how susceptible the windage adjustment bases are becoming loose.

I've seen a few of the dovetail front, windage rear setups die at bad times. It is indeed a not great setup, especially for something that will actually see use.
I would dump them and do the Talleys, but that's just me.

I'm there with you. Just seems like to many parts that could fail/come loose. I'm still a grunt at heart and very adept at breaking stuff, so simple is always better.
