I recently returned from Newfoundland moose hunt. This year I carried the Midas 12x50 binos in addition to my trusted mid-tier 10x42 binos (non-Athlon). For two days, I did side by side comparisons. Of course, I wasn't surprised that the 12x magnification came in handy for assessing moose racks at a distance. However, I was pleasantly surprised with the greater clarity and brightness across the field of view with the Athlon Midas binoculars. This came in handy in spotting moose in cover. I thought that additional weight and shallower depth of field might be an issue. At 33 oz., the 12x were twelve ounces heavier. I did not find that to be the case. My binocular harness helped with the additional weight, and I quickly got used to what seemed a slight difference in the depth of field. On the third day, my trusted 10x42 binos stayed in camp. Early in the emerging light that morning, I spotted a nice bull about a mile away. He walked into a stand of woods to emerge later, closer than before. As I stalked into bow range, the Midas binos helped me peek through the cover to view three bulls that were competing for the affection of a cow in heat. The stalk was successful and I was fortunate enough to harvest one of the bulls. The Midas 12x50 are a great binocular for this type of hunting. |
