Looking for a new toy....i reload so no problem either way...not shooting strings but looking for some smackdown power and hunting accuracy.  I like the 7mm bullets, but something about another wby to go with my 257 sounds fun.

AI is usually my choice, easier on brass, a little extra velocity.

Equality is something you whine about not being given.

For what it's worth, a Weatherby dealer I met in Louisville, Ky chose and used the .270 Weatherby magnum as his favorite  of all the Weatherby rifles he carried.

You can always load the .270 Weatherby down to .280 AI performance levels but you can't load the .280 AI up to .270 Weatherby performance.

Also, if you like 7mm bullets; why not a 7mm Weatherby?

Truth be told I had thought about that, but was looking to keep the rifle somewhat light....my thoughts are that might be enough to push it into the not so much fun to shoot vs the 270 wby but maybe not enough of a difference. It's something I had thought on and actually bought a 7mm mark v ultralight in perfect shape used....but before I ever fired it I got an offer for a few hundred more than I paid..

I think the 270 Wby pushing 150 gr pills would be a great setup.  Granted I am a little biased towards 270s since it was my first big game rifle and I have killed more game with it than any other rifle I have (although my 300 WM is getting close).  Or maybe go for the 270 WSM and stay in a short action.  Just for kicks and grins.

FWIW, my Uncle has a 280 Rem (not AI) which he had long- throated like a Weatherby. Loading Sierra 160 gr. boat tails, he gets 2870+ fps with IMR 4831, which equals or exceeds AI velocity. The rifle's accuracy didn't suffer and he has taken CO elk beyond 400 yards, more than once.
That's not in .270 Weatherby territory, but it's strong elk medicine, nevertheless.

On a side note, he's up there after 'em with that rifle, as I write this and he's within days of turning 86 years old. He has a motley crew of relatives with him to take care of minor details like loadin' the elk on a pack mule, etc.

Wow this is getting fun.....just looked at the 6.5-300 and the little 130 gr actually hits with more energy past 200 yards for the most part than the 270 or 7mm wby....

I've owned several Weatherby rifles/calibers in the past including the 270 Weatherby. In all honestly except for a current model Vanguard S2 SS in 257 I've never gotten the accuracy out of a Weatherby rifle (especially the Mark V's) that I have with other calibers and rifle brands. IMO Weatherby's chambers with LOTS of freebore isn't conducive to exceptional accuracy (1/2" or less groups).

I recently had a custom 280AI built that shoots exceptional. While I consider the 280AI to be a very good cartridge that will gain typically 100-125 fps over the standard 280 Remington it's NOT an equal of the various 7mm Mags. The main benefit in my opinion that an AI has over a standard cartridge is brass life.

If your main goal is velocity I'd pick one of the 7mm Mags over a 280AI or 270 Weatherby.

Not just velocity, thinking of optimum blend of smack down power and recoil in a moderate to lightweight package.

I'm trying the 150g LRAB's BC = .625 in my Accumark this fall.  Best group (0.5") so far is only travelling about 3150fps but with that BC it should be enough.

You mentioned your interest in a light weight rifle and the lightest rifles can be built on short actions. I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the .284 Win. Since you mentioned 6.5-300 Weatherby, how about a 6.5-.284? That has  better recoil profile than the big- cased Roy.

Have we thrown out enough stuff to make you want to go buy a bunch of rifles?

BTW, Ghostman made some excellent points, especially about giving up some of accuracy with long- throated rifles.

One point about calibers which are necked down (or up) from a parent case: the smaller bore diameter child does not have the same velocity potential as the larger diameter parent, with equal weight bullets. As example, the 280 Rem, or 6.5-06. Conversely, increasing the bore diameter over the parent case yields an increase in velocity with same weight bullets; as example, the .338-06.

Muzzle velocity is only part of down range performance. Smaller bore cartridges yield better down range ballistics than their parent cases, with same weight bullets. The smaller diameter bullet has a higher ballistic coefficient, retaining more energy down range. That higher BC bullet also will have a better sectional density and better penetration, at distance.

Lots of great food for thought....thank you all. I did think about the 6.5x284, not dead yet but I have 2 .260s and i was looking for a bit more on them.

The 6.5-300 is growing on me with the revamped accumark....but a 270 wby sounds fun too...

Don't give up in the 270Win. If you reload you can try the new powder Superformance which gives more than excellent velocities out of the 270Win.I have a plain Jane 270 Win in a 22" model 70 and can get 3150 fps with a 130 gr bullet and 3000 with a 140 gr bullet with that powder. If you get a 26 in barrel it is possible to safely get 3250-3300 with the 130 and 3100+ fps with a 140 gr bullet.  These velocities are close to the Wby Mag., and recoil will be less. The one problem about a fast 270, jacketed bullets do not perform well at close range and solid copper bullets have mediocre BCs in this caliber because the 1:10 rifling in commercial barrels limits how long the bullets can be.
It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed. TR
