First off, don't be shooting 500 yards at game. Go to the range and practice a bunch first at 500 yards. Long range isn't a game for the cheapest scope and rifle combination you can find. Not saying you need a $2000 outfit to do it, but you need the kind of experience that doesn't have to ask what scope. Don't take this as a rebuke, just being honest. Everybody started somewhere and none of us started out knowing all we needed to know to shoot 500 yards at game. Put one of the SWFA Super Sniper 6X MQ scopes on it and practice, practice, practice. You won't have any problem being proficient enough real quick to kill game out to about 200 yards. Most shots need not be any farther than that. Just take some time and know for sure what you can do before trying 500. Actually know what you can do before trying 200,but 200 is a lot easier goal to reach fast than 500. Good luck and good shooting. There is NO scope anywhere with a better reticle that will track anywhere near as well as the SWFA SS for anywhere close to $300. |

i had no intention of hunting from 500y. the ??? was dependent on how good i get with this rifle to get a clean & fast kill. which could be 100y 200y. 500y is just the range i will be shooting at for practice and fun. Eventually i plan on putting together a 700 either sps tac .308 or 700 LR in 300 win mag for myself and giving this 783 to my wife cause she wants to go hunting with me |

If you intend to hunt with this scope the 6X SWFA SS is the one you want, or else spend a bit more and get the 3X9X42 HD MQ. The 10X would be fine for targets but not what you want for a moving deer at 30 yards. I have no idea on ring height but call SWFA and they can likely help you out. |

I woudl consider spending extra and getting the SS 3-9x. Then it can better be used for hunting and target. It is a better scope all around than the classic SS's. Glass upgrade a lone is worth it in my opinion, especially for hunting where low light is often a big need.

To stay within your budget, the 6x42 SS is indeed your best bet. Personally, I like the MilQuad version.
It will do everything you need. ILya
