If you are specifically looking for a FFP scope, the Nightforce is a pretty good way to go. The only real competition there is from SWFA with the FFP SS scopes and from Burrist XTR II which is in the same basic league.
The dark horse is Steiner with the T5Xi 3-15x50 scope. It is better optically than the SHV and I am pretty certain that Steiner offers a military discount to retired military. Since Burris is the same company, they probably do too. With that out of the way, if you can live with a SFP scope (I know I sound like a broken record), Vortex Razor HD LH 3-15x42 is much lighter and is superb both optically and mechanically. If I were setting up the rifles you have, I would be likely looking at something along the lines of Razor HD LH. Besides, you can get your discount on those which really makes them a raging bargain. That depends on the application. T5Xi is a FFP precision scope. Razor HD LH is a SFP hunting scope. For hunting, I would take the Razor HD LH. For precision shooting, I would take the Steiner. ILya

Just checked and i THINK Steiner only does active and retired....... I will check to make sure. I did ten years, but didn't retire. So far Vortex is the only company I have found that offers to ALL vets.
With Vortex, all you have to provide is a dd-214 that proves you served. Thanks again guys

The Razor HD LH would be so nice on that rifle for hunting.

The Steiner T5Xi 3-15x50 sounds like a sweet scope compared to the NF...and thinking of keeping the weight down below 30 oz. I'm imagining even with a military discount it would be pricey.
In my experience, which is entirely based on hunting in Montana, there's no need for illumination 'cause hunting regs and the light conditions at these latitudes mean you're never going to use it. Low weight is good. Glass really doesn't have to be better than what's in the SS 3-15. When you take a shot, you just need to know that the reticle is centered on the right part of the animal, not see every hair on it with razor clarity. Save the big bucks for uber-glass bins so you can comfortably find something to shoot.

The only thing about the razor lh that I don't like is that it does not have exposed turrets. I like exposed turrets to dial in distance.
