Picked up a Remington 700 VLS with a 26" heavy varmint barrel in .223 last week. First tweak will be a new trigger and to glass in the action. The stock is tight from not the best finishing inside the barrel channel. Also thinking about free floating, but found a 3/4 inch node against the barrel 2 1/2 to 3 1/4 back from the front of the stock. Before I sand this out, Has anyone had experience on whether fully free floating might provide a more consistent shooter, Or will this node help dampen the barrel harmonics. My first thought is to remove it. I have not shot it yet. The trigger is a Obama Lawyers delight.

Remove it, nothing touches the barrel!

I only use free floated barrels on precision rifles. I'm not saying they cannot work otherwise, but why have anything touch the barrel.

BTW, Timney triggers are a big improvement.
