My son just picked up a M89 carbine in Hunter Black SS and standard walnut stock. He has a lot of rifles in varying calibres so this was a "just because" purchase. Haven't had a chance to take it to the range yet but first impressions were very favourable. Wood to metal fit is excellent and metal work finishing is very nice. Action is stiff right now indicative of close tolerances but should work in nicely. Really like the peep sight on the bolt and white front bead. Location of the peep seemed an unusual configuration at first but comes up really well to my eye. Stock is standard walnut but still attractively figured.
This rifle will be used for bear, deer and moose at close ranges. There is a LOT of choice in ammo for this calibre so my question is has anyone had much experience/preference with what seems to work best? Will not be reloading at this point. Pic below is from Big Horn's website but is identical to his rifle. |

That's a big slug, will he be hunting woolly mammoth or small space stations?

Probably the former! The boy does like large calibres. Guess the 454 Puma just didn't cut it and he couldn't afford to feed a 458 Lott like Dan.

No experience with feeding that rifle, but my S&W PC 500 likes HSM, Hornady, Winchester and Corbon. The Winchester was the most potent for me. It was 400gn platinum tip with muzzle velocity of 1888ft/sec if I remember correctly. A very fun round to shoot. The HSM seems to be a little less expensive. And they all seem to group similarly. Also in the beginning I used Ultra Max, but avoid it now since it was very dirty for me.

I have one, also with the black finish, except mine is the "rifle" version with longer barrel.
I posted about it here: http://www.opticstalk.com/new-toy_topic42816.html My only criticisms: 1. You need to work the lever pretty aggressively to make it feed properly or sometimes the bullet nose can jam up against the feed ramp. Basically, just don't be tentative or gentle with the lever throw; work it "like you mean it" and you shouldn't have any trouble. 2. The load gate is rather small in proportion to the .500 S&W cartridge, so loading can sometimes pinch your thumb a little if you have a large thumb like me. Otherwise, it's a good shooting, beautifully made, kick azz rifle, and I love mine! |

Thanks Ted, I missed that post. Beautiful grain on your stock. Aaron's is plainer but still very nice. Looking forward to putting some rounds down range soon. No scope will be going on this rig! Weight was surprising after handling a M94 all these years.
Thanks Sparky for your feedback as well. Will have to try out a few different combos - any of the bullet weights I have seen would be more than enough for the game we hunt. |
