The 590 is a good shotgun, been around for ever and has proven itself.
Lifetime warranty and excellent customer service don't mean a thing when your gun fails during a zombie attack.

I'm a fan of any Mossberg shotgun.  I have a 500 Cruiser for HD and fill it with #4 buckshot.  This one is pistol grip only and not too fun to shoot but gets the job done.  It was less than $290 after tax.

I've had both Remmington and Mossberg shotguns both work well and bird shot holds a tight pattern up close  Using bird shot and reinforcing the wall with 3/4 in plywood might be a reasonable choice.

Most burglars will not enter a house with a large dog in it.

I knew a guy in Kilgore, Texas who killed a man deader than hell with a 410! He wounded the second one and ended the encounter right there in the front yard. End of story.

Make sure it is legal in your state.  There is hot debate on other forums if it really is legal in Texas or not since state law defines it where federal law does not.

Well, here in South Africa during the great apartheid war every second white dude carried a Taurus. The rest carried Llamas.  I had one and of course they were all 38 Special caliber with hollow point bullets. We were mean dudes!!!. So in South Africa today you cannot give these relics away. The gunshops literally have  44 gallon drums at the door which you toss the old revolver/pistol in for disposal.

Fast forward some 25 years.....

Today it is better to get raped, murdered, plundered or have the Deliverance experience then shoot an intruder. The latter is far less traumatizing.

I have a self defense weapon but it is locked away in my safe where I cannot get hold of it!!!!

So the answer is to make your property less attractive to the scumbag then your neighbors......Your wall must be higher, your burglar bars thicker, your dog bigger etc....

Yep Wouter I feel your pain, the good times just keep rolling on. Same issues here.  Most important thing here past your weapon of choice is a really good lawyer on speed-dial and funds for bail if you get that lucky.

Maverick 88 is the econo version of the Mossberg 500 at less than $200. Birdshot is your best bet for dropping the intruder while not blowing through all the walls. Stick a light on it and call it good for home defense. Mossberg 500 pumps are the only gun of any type I have ever had that was 100% reliable. You can shortstroke it and screw it up, it just so happens I never have.

I don't know if the experts agree, but having kids in the house, I want to have some confidence of placing my shots on a plane above bed level. A shotgun fired from the shoulder is easier to keep above kid level than a pistol or even pistol gripped shotgun. I'm saying if the intruder comes in during the wee hours and everyone but you is in bed or hiding in a corner, a shotgun with bird shot will stop the intruder while having the least chance of seriously harming anyone else.

That is unless you are being overrun by zombies midgets. When there are zombie midgets involved, all bets are off.
