I've finally decided to retire my old 30-30 and build a new AR-15 in 6.8 SPC. I'll use it to hunt whitetail deer and hogs on family land in Georgia. Ranges will be from 30 yards to 300 yards. I'd like to keep the price of the scope in the $200 or less range. I'd like a wide field of view at low magnification for the close shots. I'd also like to be able to hunt from a stand until last light, so a larger objective might be nice. My 30-30 has an Nikon Monarch 2x7x32 which has served me well. I have a second Nikon Monarch 2x7x32 which is several years old and has never been mounted. I've considered mounting it on the AR, but it has a glossy finish, and I think that would look a bit silly on a black and flat dark earth rifle. I want a matte finish scope on this new AR. I might trade the old glossy Nikon in for credit on SWFA. Has anyone here had experience with the Swift 2x7x40?

After reading Koshkin's Under $200 recommendations I've added the Vortex Diamondback and Burris Fullfield II families to my research list. Based on my earlier visits to this forum I bought a 3-9x40 Fullfield II for my son's 30.06, which has been a good scope for him. But he only hunts from a stand. The 2-7x35 might be an option for me as I like to still hunt in the woods sometimes. Is the Vortex Diamondback being discontinued? I can't find the 2-7x35 scopes available, except the rimfire version. I can still find some Diamondback HD scopes available, and the 2-8x32 is in my price range. But the only ones I can find for sale have the BDC reticle, which doesn't interest me. I also worry about performance at dusk with only a 32mm objective lens. I realize that coatings are important too, but doesn't size matter in light transmission? |

With a max of 8x mag a 32mm objective is sufficent. Keeps the exit pupil at 4mm at 8x. I have that scope and it is a decent scope.

Use the Nikon. Get some camo or fde wrap from amazon and that will fix the gloss issue. You could also duracoat or spray paint it. Painted rifles are in style right now.
I did not realize how old this thread was. Should pay more attention. |

Hello, I am in the Savannah area and also use 6.8. I have for about 7 years as my primary hunting rifle. I tried a few different scopes, working my way up the ladder, and always with the goals of better clarity in low light, and shedding weight. I finally arrived at the Leupold Vari-X 2 (or VXII) model. I went with the LR Duplex. It has a few dots under the crosshairs that allow range finding. I can hit a 300 yd gong that is 10" in diameter all day by putting it between dots 1 and 2. I have not had the opportunity to get a shot that long on a deer, I shoot everything in the jungles around here much closer. But I have no doubt that I could do it. These scopes sell new for around $329 I believe. It's not a bargain scope, but I think its a great scope. It weighs only 12 oz or so. I have it mounted in an Aero Precision mount. Good luck!
