Proof Research makes carbon fiber wrapped barrels that they say they supply to the military. Wondered about this type of barrel for a long time since stiffness per weight is better. I have no experience, with this type of barrel. Just wondering if anyone has experience with these barrels they would like to comment on. What are the tradeoffs besides price? Is the Proof research barrel any better than say Christensen Arms?

I have a friend who has a Christensen in 300 Win. and he loves it to death. The rifle is a real shooter.
Over on the Rokslide forum the consensus seems to favor Proof Research. I've seen the same thoughts on some other sites also. |

There is also CarbonSix and one other maker I can't quite recall the name of.
Christensen used to have a reputation for POI changes once the barrel heated up. I do not know if that is still accurate. ILya |

A guy I shoot with occasionally has a Christensen 270 WSM. After 4 or 5 rounds his POI shifts like on a lighter weight barrel.
Supposedly Proof has developed theirs to where the carbon actually pulls the heat away from the barrel and they can be shot much longer before that happens. Greg Young at bugholes.com told me in an email in the 1 sample he built for himself that POI change was not an issue. There is also Fierce Firearms. They have a carbon barrel as well. They are extremely accurate rifles. According to one of the onsite smiths they will heat up faster than steel of the same diameter but not of the same weight. Their shop is about 15 miles from me and about 1 mile from Christensen arms. I know a few guys who have their rifles and they are excellent. |

My Christensen BA tactical is sweet. Have not noticed any shift...light as heck and recoil feels like 308 win out of my 338. Have only shot 30 rounds so far and 200 max...still breaking it in but no noticeable shift.
I will get another one most likely when budget allows. |

Does the military use carbon fiber wrapped barrels at all? Seems to me the barrels would be useful for sniper rifles since they would lighten the rifle by several pounds and still maintain barrel stiffness

My latest .308 AR comes in at under 6 lbs. A PR barrel would've added 3 oz over the Faxon I used and cost another $600. It just wasn't in the budget or needed. Would I take one? Yes. Do I need one? I don't fire much or fast.
(Weight savings mostly from 2A upper/lower, fixed carbon stock/buffer tube, light handguard and some titanium here and there).

I am still looking at different carbon fiber barrels and it looks like there are at least four makers I can buy a barrel from, all claiming something different:
Proof BSF CarbonSix BSF I need to convinced someone to sponsor one of each for me. For test purposes. ILya |
