I have a Weatherby Mark V 257WM which i inherited from my father and im in need of a scope for it. After doing some research on this caliber i find its capable of long range with a flat trajectory and id like to put a scope on it that was capable of taking advantage of that. Cost is a huge factor in my decision as i can not afford to put the scope on it I would like to if say i won the lottery. So I was hoping some of you folks would give me some advice in this area. i have been looking at Vortex, SWFA and Nikon scopes which are in the $400-700 price range. The lower the cost the better but i also realize great glass is by no means cheap.
I am not stuck on just those 3 brands by any means so feel free to chime in with your favorite low cost scopes. Thanks for your time folks.

Yeah i guess i should have included answers to those questions.
It will be a target rifle and i want to be able to to get the most out of I can. Over the next year Ill be setting up my reloading room. At the moment I have alot of unused equipment like dies, Dillon 550 press, press accessories and much much more. I inherited this stuff from my father and i want to put it to use. While I have other rifles i thought the 257WM might be the best one for long range shooting. As for how far I intend to shoot all i can say is, as far as my own abilities will let me. Im very new to this and it intrests me greatly.

I've done a bit of reloading for 257 Weatherby Mag, and I recommend you do some shooting before deciding on it as a range gun. It is a long action caliber, components are not inexpensive, and it takes lots of powder to push that little bullet that fast.
That said, it is a fun caliber to shoot, and is a great hunting caliber. I've seen some awesome animals taken cleanly with a few 257s at long-ish ranges. When it comes to low cost scopes with excellent tracking and serviceable glass, nothing beats SWFA's 10X SS for a range gun. It is not a small scope, but it is a great scope for the money. With that, you can spend more on your reloading and shooting. I know factory ammo for that gun ain't cheap. And don't go cheap on the mounts. Good mounts will save you much grief and frustration later.

For how many rounds does the barrel on one of those last for target accuracy?

I've never seen any official barrel life specs on a 257 Wby or any Weatherby barrel. Too many factors involved such as how hot reloads are, how hot you let the barrel get while firing, care of the barrel...etc.
Folks on the Weatherby forum estimate 2000 rounds of factory 257 Wby ammo with no overheating and proper barrel maintenance. Take it for what it is worth. I'm a big fan of the caliber and have a Eurosport that I use as my pronghorn rifle. It is expensive to feed though, regardless whether you reload or shoot factory ammo. I ran a Nikon Monarch 4-16x42 with a BDC reticle when I first got it back in 2000 and currently wears a Leupold VX6 2-12x. Vortex Viper HS 4-16x44 would be my choice given your price range. Good solid hunting scope. Have one on my son's Tikka T3 Lite and works well for him.

I like RC's suggestion for the 10x SS also. It's a proven winner for the novice and pro alike.

Thanks for the suggestions folks they are appreciated. The advice is also welcome. Ill have to do a bit more research on the rifles i have and see which would be not only good for long range but also economical to shoot. My dad had a pretty nice gun collection when he passed away so I guess im in a better position than most to take this up as a beginner. I cant remember the last time i actually saw him shoot a gun unless it was when we were teaching my two sons to shoot just as he taught me and my brother so long ago.
As for a scope im very interested in both Vortex and the SWFA lines and will most likely go with one of those.

Don't let that 257 barrel get hot. I have to take a long break every other shot because of the heat on mine. If you can't hold your hand on it comfortably, it's too hot to shoot again. Very sorry to hear about your father and hope this helps a little.

Thank you for the thoughts of my father. I have to admit i do like handling his rifles and pistols. Also i cant wait to get my reloading room setup especially since he never did get it set back up after they moved to my moms current house. Ill be sure to keep the barrel cool between shots. Thanks for the info.
