    Posted: June/11/2017 at 15:01
I have several rimfire rifles that I use to plink and target practice.  Occasionally, I hunt with the rimfires.  Most of the time, I shoot in the 50 to 100 yd range.  I have three rifles that have Nikon variable BDC rimfire scopes -- P Rimfire 2-7x32, Prostaff II 3-9x40, and Prostaff II 4-12-40 (all purchased from SWFA via the samples listings).

I tend not to shoot as much through iron sights as my eyes get older.  So, I am looking for additional scopes.  A friend of mine wants to sell his rimfire scopes and said I would like his nearly unused Nikon 4x32 fixed scope.  I have an older rifle in mind for that scope.  He has other rimfire scopes to sell but did not provide details.  I plan to drop by to look at the scopes.   What are the advantages of a fixed scope compared to a variable scope?  Is the Nikon Rimfire 4x32 a decent scope?  I noticed that Nikon no longer sells that scope.  Were there issues?

I greatly appreciate any input.

I've used both, fixed power and variables for my Marlin 60. I use it primarily for rodent control, (rats ad squirrels) and I'm pretty happy with my Weaver 2-7x Rimfire scope.

I had and liked a 4x Prostaff, but like the variables a tad more.

Is this scope an older Prostaff?

I am not sure if it is an older Prostaff or not.  I am meeting with my friend this evening and will find out soon enough.  It will be interesting to see that scope and the other rimfire scopes.

I wish I could use my rimfires for rodent control at my home.  Unfortunately, I live in suburbia of a major metro area.  I do have a suppressor, so I am tempted at times!

I've run a lot of scopes on 22 rifles over the years. Currently I have a Savage bolt action with a short threaded barrel that has a fixed 6x Super Sniper with Kenton Industry knobs set for subsonic ammo that sees use mainly at 50 & 100 yds.  If I did the kenton knobs again rather than use "Speed Dial" I would go with the "Long Range Hunter" style. Mine takes me from about 50 yds to about 110 yds but thats where I use it.  The first set I had they mistakenly made them starting at 100 rather than starting at 50 and only went from 100 to about 140 so lots of drop in one turn of the knob out past 100. Not happy that the size of the hex wrench is so small that it is not in a normal set of hex wrenches.
I have had 2-7 weaver scopes on 22s and liked them a lot also had a 4-16 bushnell on for a while. I think that a 2-7 is the best all around choice for 22.

I've used fixed 4x scopes on 22, and they are OK, but I really like a 2-7 for 22s. Just more versatile in my opinion.

2-7x32 Monarch for a 10-22 here. I like it a lot but prefer my old B&L Balfor 4x on another 10-22 I have. That is probably because the B&L glass is excellent. The Monarch is fine and the Weaver 2-7 rimfire will serve just as well.

Thanks for all of the replies.  I did purchase the Nikon 4x32 scope mentioned in my original post along with two other rimfire scopes - Weaver 4x32 and Weaver 2.5-7x28.  The scopes are nearly new and include the original boxes and paperwork (kind of like a SWFA Sample List Demo-A).  I purchased the scopes for $225 cash.  My friend acquired some 22lr rifles and scopes about 4 or 5 years ago.  He never really got into rimfire shooting.  He mainly shoots handguns and collects military arms (rifles, pistols, bayonets, etc.).

I noticed a few favorable comments on the 2-7 rimfire scopes, so I am looking forward to using my Weaver.  Also, I will be interested to compare my Nikon scopes against the Weaver scopes.  The Weaver scopes are compact and would fit well on a Ruger 10-22 takedown that I have yet to buy (don't tell my wife).

Friend of mine (Davy) told me that the Government could cut down on firearms purchases by making the 1st question on the form 4473 read, "Does your wife Know your buying this gun and what's her phone number".
