Looking for opinions on the subject spotting scope.

My brother is toying with the idea of taking up long range shooting. I'm already in trouble when I showed him a Tikka T3x TAC A1 in 6.5 CM, which he promptly bought mounting a Sig Tango6 5-25 scope on it.

Most of his purchases start out as good intentions and quickly become hangar queens in the safe. Before he jumps on a $1600+ spotting scope, thought I would get him started with something that is reasonably reliable at spotting .264 and .308" holes at 200 yards. Gave him a sanity check that even the most expensive scopes have a tough time beyond 300.

Just happened to run across this one for $500. It is the predessesor to their M2 model.

I know it is big and heavy, but this will be used off the bench.

Don't know much about the company but think I owned one of the telescopes when my son was young.

Celestron is a decent scope maker.  I've been researching them, looking at a few, and have been suitably impressed for the money.  Regal 100 ED is actually probably my choice for a spotting scope.  I know a guy who is going to let me take his to the range when I get an opportunity, but may just pull the trigger before then.  I like it pretty well.

Appreciate the feedback.  For where he is, it minimizes the investment but still provides a spotting scope that performs reasonably well.

It is better than reasonable.  Clean and clear and performs well in low light.

How would it compare to the Razor HD or Zen Ray ED 20-60x spotting scopes? These are two reference points that I have.

Larger objective size on the Celestron will definitely give it an edge and a 67x top end.

Opted to buy this one.  At a minimum, it should serve my brother well in the interim.

Reviews I found seem to put it in the Zen Ray/Razor HD performance range.

Appreciate the advice.
