I think the first question would be "What do you want to use it for?" For nearly all of us, in nearly all hunting situations, I think a 3X9X40 is just about the perfect scope; the best one you can afford. I put a 2.5X8 VX III on my Kimber .260 because the 36mm objective let me use low rings. (Is there any parctical difference between 2.5X8 and 3X9? I don't think so). Do I buy just about anything but a 3X9? Yes We all want the lastest greatest newest, like a 3.5X10!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you shoot targets for groups, you'll find out pretty quick you need a lot of magnification. I've got a Burris Black Diamond 2.5X10X44 on my 22-250, and really wish I had gotten 16X or 20X on the top end. Even with a fine reticle, on 10X you're point of aim will vary an inch or more at 100 yds.
I've got an old Redfield 4X on my 30-30. It bangs around in my truck most of the time, and what matters most about it is it maintains point of impact. It's not very bright or sharp, but that doesn't bother me.
What do you want on every scope, regardless of use?
1. Durability, maintains point of impact. 2. Fits the rifle, weight, length, diameter, power, field of view, eye relief 3. Image quality 4. Reticle - I like a duplex reticle that is wide or heavy, but narrows to very fine. For example, I bought a VXIII Heavy Duplex and returned it because the crosshairs were too heavy, and covered about 2 MOA at 100 yds. I like a "ballistic" reticle on my 22-240, with a cross at 300, 400, and 500 yards, because I shoot it that far. I don't want the extra junk on my hunting rifles, because I never shoot over 200.
Bottom line? I could probably put a 3X9X40 on everything I have and do just fine, or even a 6X. Am I going to? No way I love all the choices we have now. |
