Interesting that the story told that it was nature so they should not intervene. The story also noted the rhino was without a horn and that could have been a factor. Do they not saw the horns off to make rhinos less likely to be shot for their horns?

Have read that rhino horns are removed to prevent poaching, whether the outcome would have different is debatable.  I have also read from various sources that hippos are dangerous game that should be taken seriously and regularly kill numerous people.  I have no interest in getting close to the business end of those beasts.

I have 35mm pictures of rhinos with their horns almost sawed in half....I watched one sawing away on a fence wire one time while I took pictures....

De-horning rhino is a well established anti-poaching technique. Most of the game parks and private owners de-horn the rhino which does remove the incentive for a poacher to kill such a rhino. We are losing hundreds of rhino every year to poachers.

How they de-horn it is another story....Ed's explanation sounds quite plausible. A lot of fences have been put up in rhino poaching areas and it is noted that a lot of rhino can be seen without horns. Teams of vets with helicopters and dart guns are scouring the area to make sure no rhino hurts itself.
