Can anyone suggest this for a friend? Looking for positives and negatives. ? Looking for short-distance 3-9ft out to say three or four hundred yards.

Thank you as always.

Anything as good that we should be looking at about the same price range a thousand to 1500.

My 411 on the THOR is that it is good for ID out to 100-150 yard, detect 300-350.  It is decent, but I don't trust anything ATN very much.  Their customer service sucks…   I've thought long and hard about it… I would not buy one.

For the building, etc, inspection, I would get the FLIR C3. Then an independent thermal scope. The Pulsar thermal imaging scopes are reported good performers without breaking the bank.  I think RC has one.
SPI X-25 is one I've been considering.  I've gotten some good and some bad.  Thermal is expensive.  The only thermals I REALLY would recommend are FLIR.  Big bucks, but perform.  I did a comparison of FLIR vs several other contenders when I was with F/A-18 Program Office.  FLIR won, hands down. They keep the edge...

If you need crosshairs and not just a handheld observation optic, unfortunately, I don't believe you can get an acceptably useful thermal sight for less than around $2000 at this point in time unless you can find a used unit for sale. And, a $2000 thermal will have extremely low resolution. The "ok" stuff starts at around $3k and the "good" stuff is $4k and up into the stratosphere.

Maybe in a few years, that will change.

I had a Pulsar 550, digital NV, not thermal. I've spent a fair bit of time on a Sig Echo1, it is thoroughly okay, but needs a big delta in temp to be of much use, and it is relatively low red and has an annoying refresh.

I've installed the latest firmware on my ATN 5-18 X-sight.  Fired about 30 subsonic rounds and it is working still, no freezes.  I've only fired at short range, so no determination of how the ballistic calculator works or any of the other features.  Right now, I just want it to allow me to shoot coyotes at night.  Hope to test it tonight.
