I am looking for a scope for a unique purpose. It is for a DMR competition series with two classes: DMR(any glass) and RECCE (up to 6X max). This year I am shooting DMR (Using March 3-24X42) and am doing very well so I am going to attempt the other class next year. Distance will be out to 700 yards. Competition rules allow up to 6X MAX magnification for the RECCE class. My requirements are: 1. Mil/mil 2. Reticle that can be used for holdovers as well as leads for movers. 3. As good of glass as I can get to spot misses and trace. 4. Accurate target/tactical style turrets. Zerostop would be nice. 10 mil preferred. 5. Budget is flexible, I'll say under 2000. So far I'm looking at (in order of preference): 1. SWFA fixed 6X. Most of what I need, nothing I don't. But wouldn't mind nicer turrets and glass. WAY below budget. Fixed 6X mag might be too high for some of the fast mover stages. 2. Vortex Razor 1-6 VMR-2 MIL. Biggest downside is .2 mil clicks. 3. Kahles 1-6. Not sure of the turrets on this one 4. Steiner 1-4. Already own this. Turrets are great but not the reticle I want. Would like 6X. This is my backup since I already own it. Are there any other suggestions? I am doing very well this year, and I am attributing much of it to the versatility of the March 3-24. I have used it at 3X many times as well as high mag. There have been a few stages where the ability to spot my own trace helped with changing winds on a stage. Obviously I won't be able to do as much with a 6X scope but looking to get as good of glass as I can. |

Kahles is probably one of the better 1-6x scopes out there, but it is not designed for frequent turret twisting. They track fine, but are not the exposed, easy to grab, type.
Most of the 1-6x scopes really aren't. I really like the the turret on the Razor Gen2, but is it does not have a zerostop (and the clicks are 0.2 mrad). I think EOTech Vudu 1-6x24 has an exposed turret, but I do not remember if it has a zero stop. If you really want exposed turrets with a zerostop, you may want to look at Leupold Mark 6 1-6x20. Thanks. I forgot about the Vudu. I think the Mark 6 has .2 mil clicks as well. Zerostop is nice, but not a hard requirement. I would rather have .1 mil clicks than zerostop. Here's a question: What am I losing glass quality wise going with the SWFA 6X vs high dollar 1-6 glass? The SWFA has far less complexity and much larger objective. I can live with only 6X so most of the complexity and price is wasted on the 1-6s. I am open to 1.5-6 optics as well. I wonder if S&B ever made a PMII 6X42. |

I just set up a 1-6 Vortex Strike Eagle and am very happy with it. https://swfa.com/vortex-1-6x24-strike-eagle-30mm-rifle-scope.html |

What you give up is the speed of a 1X. The gen2 Razor is my favorite right now, glass is great, easy to get behind, and mil scale works fine at 6X.
And, with 7 mils on the reticle at 6X, do you really care about the 0.2 mil adjustment? I'm writing this from a beach in Jamaica, by the way, so responses may be slow. |

I don't really care about 1X speed, the shortest shot will be 300 yards. I might be able to live with .2mil adjustments, but having to zero with .2 mil will drive my ADD nuts.
Some targets are sub-MOA though so I'd prefer .1mil adjustments.

If the shortest shot will be 300 yards, I agree, skip the Vortex 1-6X and get exactly what you want. The SS 6X is a great scope for the money, but turret feel isn't the best (nor could it be at that price) and glass is good but not great.
Lastly, you are looking for something very specialized, I would rank that first list in terms of needs and wants, and decide what is essential and what is not. I'm not sure exactly what you want exists, so you might have to make a compromise or 2. |

Yeah, I basically need the HD version of the swfa fixed 6. Something tells me the market for that might not be great. There are many 1-8 optics that fit the bill perfectly but it's unlikely they will be allowed.

It is an interesting conundrum.
You should also consider IOR Tactical 6x42. IOR has been making this scopeo forever and a day, so they have it reasonably figured out. I think it is more or less the only premium 6x scope remaining with tactical inclinations. Also, IOR's latest switch power scope (Pitbul 2) is a 1x/6x30 design with exposed turrets and 0.1 mrad clicks. I have not tested either of their switch power scopes so I do not have any real personal opinions on them, but they do usually have good glass. Lastly, I am not sure if it is available in the US, but S&B does offer a 1.5-6x20 version of the the Short Dot with a P3 reticle and exposed elevation turret (I think; it has been a while since I have seen one). Does this scope actually exist:
http://bushnell.com/tactical/riflescopes/elite-tactical/smrs-1-6-5x-25mm Not sure if it will be allowed due to the extra .5x. I have found no reviews or pictures other than that stock photo. |

If Ilya has tested that actual Bushnell model he could probably tell you if it really is 6 1/2 power.

The IOR 6X is the one I kept trying to remember, it is a great little scope.
I have no experience with their switch-power scopes. I was never a huge fan of the concept till I got the Elcan DR - and now love that little scope. |

I thought that Bushnell quickly moved onto the 1-8.5x SMRS. I have seen very few of the earlier 1-6.5x ones.
As far as magnification goes, if the rules say 6x, you should not be using a scope labeled 6.5x. ILya |

I'd get the SWFA 6X MQ. It is mechanically rock solid and tracks perfectly. Optically, it is very good. No, image quality won't be quite at the level of what you get with a $2500 scope, but it's surprisingly good. You're not going to be held back by image quality, and just as importantly if not more so, the MQ reticle is superb. It's not that difficult to build a fixed 6X scope with good optics, and anything you can buy topping out at 6X that does have better optics will only be marginally better, at significantly higher price. You would find the optical difference will not be significant for competition, and you'd be hard pressed to find a better reticle for the purpose at any price. With min shot distances of 300 yards, a variable scope is only adding cost without benefit.

That is a reasonable argument.
We're I looking for a fixed 6x for precision still shooting, SWFA 6X42 would likely be at the top of my list. Although, if I ran into a Kahles ZF-95 in good condition, I would not pass it up either. ILya |

Kahles ZF84 is pretty darn good, as well… if you could find one.

I had one of those. Liked everything except the glass. At 6x I found it's ability to see detail lacking. I am better able to spot hits with my 1-4 Steiner than with the 1-6 swfa. I have owned multiple 5-20 and 10HD (still have one lying around) and had no issues with the glass in those. Just did not get along with the 1-6. I'm going to pick up a 6x during the Black Friday sale. Worst case is it goes on a loaner rifle for new shooters. I also saw that USO made a 1.5-6x28. Jng mil reticle. If I can find one with erek knob that would be perfect. |

I have my eyes on a USO SN-4 1.5-6 with Erek. Has everything I want although it's not cheap and I'm concerned about glass quality. I once owned a ST-10 and compared it to a Bushnell LRHS. The Bushnell's glass won out by far. It was really not even close.
I'd hate to pay $1200 for the SN-4 and not have it perform any better than the SWFA fixed 6. |
