I have been thinking of a 6.5 Creedmoor and found a Rem 700 SS 5R in 308 NIB for $700 and was thinking I could rebarrel it into a 6.5 Creedmoor. Or I could just get the Ruger Precision or a Savage Stealth or LRP and not have to mess with it. It will just be a bench gun out to 600yds max for the most part. But occasionally farther. Not sure if going the rebarrel of the Rem is going to be worth it in the long run. Thoughts anyone?

Tikka CTR would fit that bill, have 260 rem and I think they added 6.5. Smooth action, 10 round metal mag, accurate as hell. Only downside is stock is plasticky.
That thing on the left....my old ride, some days I miss her.

A friend bought a Ruger Precision in 6.5 and, I have to admit, it is a nice little gun (I'm not a Ruger rifle enthusiast.)  I bought a Seekins SP10 in 6.5 and very much like it too, but it ain't a bolt gun.

Were I you, I would not buy a 700 then re-barrel.  That said, a 5R NIB for $700, even in 308, would be tempting.  Get that, shoot the barrel out, then rebarrel to 6.5 when it needs a new one.

If staying inside 600, you don't gain a whole lot by going 6.5.  Where it shines is out past what a 308 can do well.

Opinions vary.

If you just want a 6.5, scratch the itch.

The Tikka CRT in 6.5 would also be a good choice.  Shoot it till you get sick of the stock, then re-stock it.  I have a CRT in 308 and it is a great gun, very useful, not crazy heavy, accurate enough, butter smooth action.

With all options but the Ruger Precision you have to put something in,  With the Ruger, it is good to go straight out of the box.

Or go get the Seekins SP10 and call it good.  I love mine, shoots great, box-to-range ready.

Equality is something you whine about not being given.

Thanks guys!

I had not thought of the Tikka CTR. But I am not sure if the 20" barrel is enough. I was thinking of a 24" barrel. Or am I not going to lose much with the 20"?

And RC I had not thought of the Seekins either. I do have an Armalite AR10T in 308 that I could wait until I need to re-barrel and then go with the 6.5.

For targets I'd be inclined to go with as small case capacity as I could get away with. If 6.5mm and off-the-shelf, then the Grendel. If not 6.5mm, I like being able to buy .223 match ammo fairly inexpensviely. If you load your own, then whichever else strikes your fancy. Heavy 6mm would be interesting.

I would not rebarrel from .308 if 600 yards paper is the focus. If the Tikka CTR was available with the bolt handle on the correct side, I'd sure have one; probably in .260. (I have dies and brass for .260 and none for Creedmoor.)

In short, you've probably already got a rifle to do this. That puts you in the realm of just getting whatever you feel like playing with in the short term.

Was at the LGS to see if they had any Ruger Precisions in stock. They did but they are going back due to a recall. But they had three new rifles. A Bergara LRP, BMP and a Tikka T3X TAC, all in 6.5 Creedmoor. Never heard of Bergara rifles, but I have heard of their barrels, has a Timney 510 trigger and takes AICS mags. The Tikka is nice as usual and is has a folding stock, but it takes their own proprietary mags. Any thoughts?

I like tikka mag better than aics. Its a double stack so half the length for 10 rounds.

An AR10 in 6.5 Creedmoor sounds good to me.
Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.

The Tikka T3X Tac A1 is a sweet rifle.  Helped my brother buy one when we were visiting them in FL.  Setup very nicely.  Trigger is very crisp, action the typical Tikka smooth.

My sister in law sent me home shortly after she saw the receipt, so didn't have a lot of time behind the rifle, but I was impressed.  I'm not much of a chassis person, but this rifle has me rethinking that position.

I'd be buying one if it wasn't for a custom rifle and AR10 that I already have in that caliber.

If you see the propriety Tikka mags as an issue, and for what they charge it is, there are people working on replacement bottom metal to allow AI mags.

Its been done for the T3s and it's being worked on for the CTRs. Not sure on the TACs yet (too new).
