I have a late '70s vintage Remington 700 BDL in .300 Win Mag that I'm wanting to upgrade the scope on, primarily for elk and deer hunting in the Pacific Northwest. It currently has a Bushnell 3-9x40 of a similar vintage. Since the area I'm planning to hunt will include shots from literally 10 yds to upwards of 700 yds, I want a variable with something like a 2-12x range. My budget is $750-$1000.
I've narrowed the choices down to a Leupold 2-12x42 VX-6 discontinued (not the HD) for around $750, a Bushnell 2.5-16x50 Elite 6500 for $780, a Hawke 2.5-15x50 for $720, a Sightron 2.5-17.5x56 S-TAC for $900, or a Trijicon 2.5-12.5x42 AccuPoint for $909. Although they've undoubtedly improved tremendously over the past 40 years, I've been kind of underwhelmed with the low-light capability of my old Bushnell, but the newer model with a larger size objective may be much better. I'm actually leaning towards the Trijicon, with no batteries to fool with and I've heard good comments about them on this forum. I have no knowledge of the Hawke or Sightron. Can someone who has used these or similar scopes provide some additional info as to their clarity and brightness? Also, should I be looking at something other than these five? Thanks! |

I fear I've reached that stage in life where I prefer a pedantic evening at home to a bracing exchange of gunfire in the dark.

If it were me i would get a Leupold vx-5hd 3-15x with a zl2 turret( zero lock two turn) with firedot illumination. You should be able to get that scope for $900 tp $1000. It has everything you need. Great glass, an adjustable turret which is a must for 700 yard shooting and one of the best battery illumination systems on the market.
I uave the 2-10x vx5 and love it. I also have a 2-12x vx6 and love it too, but it is not firedot. That makes the bx5 better for me. Then buy the alumina flip open caps and it gives you one amazing setup. |

This is a possible choice
http://samplelist.com/catalog/product/view/id/178622/ http://samplelist.com/zeiss-3-15x50-conquest-hd5-rifle-scope-demo-b-3.html If you can spend a little more I would choose this because it is first focal plane and you can dial in correction for trajectory compensation or use the mil based marks for known hold over http://swfa.com/swfa-ss-hd-5-20x50-tactical-30mm-riflescope-3.html another option less money same FFP Mil Mil http://swfa.com/swfa-ss-3-15x42-tactical-rifle-scope-3.html http://www.jbmballistics.com/cgi-bin/jbmtraj-5.1.cgi |

I like the accupoints with triangle post reticle.
I’m not a Leupold fan, but several here like them. And 300WM, my favorite caliber, awesome at almost everything. |

Only because it keeps coming up: I don’t like calibrated reticles, they correspond to different things at different conditions, whereas a mil reticle is always a mil reticle, and some other data source can tell me what mil correction is needed. In other words, calibrated reticles are wrong for literally all conditions, except 1, and good luck defining that one.

I love accupoints also I just am not sure I could hunt with one at 700 yds. I know I could do so with some work on a mil mil FFP scope but balistic reticle scopes would take some work. I did spend a lot of time working with my Tikka 300 WSM and the 4.5-14 Zeiss Conquest Rapid Z800 and Zeiss idea is to use the magnification at a power that matches up to the bullet which really takes some time on the range and consistently loading the same bullet. I found oddly enough that I was on a different power at 200 and 300 than what they suggested but that at 400 500 600 the suggested 10x worked. While its fun to play with and try and figure out it does take lots of range time. Most ballistic reticles are set for the highest power of the scope on 2nd focal plane scopes which is great in bright day light but when it starts getting dark and you have to dial the scope down to say 6x to make the image bright then your screwed cause your are shooting way over the top of what the lines indicate but the X in the center is on at all powers. Not so with first focal plane scopes like the SS. With a mil based reticle not only can one use it to tell distance to target one can use it for known hold over.
if a 16 inch back to brisket deer covers 2 mil its 222yds away if it covers 1 mil its 444 yds away if a 24 in back to brisket elk covers 2 mil its 334 yds away if it covers 1 mil its 667 yds away just put a table of mils for objects in inches taped to the side of the stock + a balistic chart. |

This is a fixed 10x Mil Mil with really good HD glass that was designed for military use and while you don't have some of the flexibility of a variable you have rugged construction with less moving parts. I do like the single screw set up that holds the knobs on better than the three hex screw on some models. I've had this scope traded it onto the 5-20x50 SS http://swfa.com/swfa-ss-16x42-tactical-30mm-riflescope-3.html This is a fixed 16x Mil Mil with pretty good glass I have this same scope on one of my 300 Win Mags and I like it I just realize the limitations you wont get onto fast moving stuff up close but it smokes stuff at distance with a solid rest. I hear it gets wet up there. A scope with lens coatings suited to that might be worth looking into.

Of your original options, if you can find the VX-6 with illuminated reticle for that amount of money, you should snag it. I generally like newer Leupold deisgns, so anything you can find from the VX-6, VX-6HD or VX-5HD will serve you well.
If you decide to go with a non-illuminated scope, consider Vortex Razor HD LH 2-10x40. Everyone I ahve recommended it to in the last year has been happy. There are good deals for it out there and the reticle works well in low light. It is a simple and straightforward design that is really well optimized. ILya

Owned a Bushnell 2.5-16x50 Elite 6500and had it mounted on 2 different 300Win mags.
Good optics and clarity and of course Rainguard but that things as heavy as a sewer pipe (1 lb 5 oz). If your hunting from a stand and getting to it on a quad not a big deal but if there's a lot of carrying through the bush I'd look at other options. |
