Parachuting Beavers Were A Surprisingly Successful Conservation Strategy In The 1950sWhen I saw this story had to read the article. Thought they were talking about nude skydivers but turns out back in the late 40’s and early 50’s in Idaho, they re-established beaver colonies in remote areas by dropping them with surplus military parachutes. Who’d a thought? Next up parachuting wolves in Michigan, that should be a good story.

Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.

My Dad had that Jack O'Connor book in 1961. He got it through the Outdoor Life Book Club. It was gorgeous. A large coffee table-type book. Well my parents got divorced and Dad sold the farm. The book disappeared.
Years later Jack O'Connor came out with a revised Second Edition in 1977. I bought the Second Edition through the Outdoor Life Book Club in 1982 when my wife and I lived on the ranch in Wyoming. So I had the book! But not the First Edition which was going for over $100... My sister and her husband and kids stayed at the ranch house with us for a few weeks in the Fall of 1982 as they were fixing to move to Florida to get work. Well their boy went down the road about three miles away to a one-room school house out there in the ranch country for a couple of weeks. One day he borrowed the book to take it to school. I never saw the book again! YEARS LATER I was working on the railroad. It was 1995. I was driving from Dalhart, Texas to Herington, Kansas to report for work for a month. I stopped at an antique store in McPherson, Kansas to take a look around. I found a copy of that book! The Second Edition. The dust cover had some tears in it but the book was beautiful! I bought it for $10. I still have it with me! Edited by Son of Ed - November/27/2023 at 18:07 |

Great pictures. You’ve had an interesting journey trying to hang onto that book.
Jack was the polar opposite of Elmer Keith but I enjoyed reading both of them.
