Bear Claw Lodge Alaska This is Rob Fuentes, the owner of Bear Claw Lodge. He lives in Waco and I know him. He is a regular at the YMCA. Anyway, you can spend money and go up there and catch fish!! |

I’ve been to Alaska twice, both times to Rocky Point Lodge in Petersburg AK. The trips were both for sales contests for a company we formerly represented. Nothing like a trip with all expenses paid.
Read the reviews on this place and you will see its listed as Resort & Lodge. Resort it is not Lodge it is, accommodations are a bit Spartan but it was all guys and we were there to fish. The folks there could not be more accommodating and friendly and the food is to kill for. The one review complained about no breakfast or lunch. That’s a stretch because of the tides which if I recall are about 25 feet in that area so you leave and return with the tides. When you leave in the am you have a pile of baked goods for breakfast and at least a 1# fresh Halibut sandwich and fruit for lunch. Did I say the bread was homemade as were all of the baked goods. The first trip all we did was fish for Halibut because the area we were in for whatever reason had no Salmon season that year. That was not a bad thing cuz we murdered the Halibut. If I remember correctly the limit was three and it was like shooting fish in a barrel! That trip we all brought home two 70# boxes of Halibut fillets and cheeks each, some cheeks the size of hockey pucks. Halibut has to be in the top three because it keeps so well and is great prepared so many ways. The second trip was even better because the Salmon season was open so we fished for both Salmon & Halibut. Now comes the best part the owner asked if we wanted to go check his crab traps the first afternoon and little did we know we were going to be introduced to Dungeness Crabs. Dungy’s are the best crabs on the planet bar none! Did I say don’t get your fingers close to one, they wouldn’t let us help clean them. That trip I brought two 70# boxes home again this time with 6 dozen Dungy’s, King Salmon and Halibut fillets and cheeks. I’ve fished at a fly in lodge in Labrador for Brook Trout where the accommodations were maybe a bit more Spartan and the meals pretty good but nothing close to Rocky Point, Petersburg, AK. PS: I brought home a 6# Brookie from Labrador, OK, there were 6 of us and we brought home 5 Brookies that were 6#’s and a 5#’er. We were only allowed to keep one fish and it was all barbless single hooks. Sorry for the fishing rant but Mr. Ed brought back a lot of memories with his Alaska post. |

Halibut are barn doors, not really my thing. Salmon, now that’s fun and they pull hard! If you time your trip right you can catch the tail end of the kings and the start of the silvers, Silvers are true jumpers and the kings can be brutes. 🤙

Welp, I haven't seen Rob in about a year....he bought a houseboat and is "parked" over at the marina ( on the river...) and he lives on it. Well, they got a fitness joint over there.....besides he spent all summer in Alaska....
