I just ordered a Tikka T3x in .223 and am looking for a good scope (<$700) that I can use on the range and see bulllet holes at 200 yards, if practicle. I have a good spotting scope. Will also use the rifle for varmints.
Any suggestions will be appreciated. |

These are some I would consider for my bolt .223. They are on the sample list. Being able to see .223 holes at 200+ requires a scope with really clear glass and a good side focus. Also the type of target you use will come into play. I use left over Christmas paper, it gives a large white background and I use 1/2" price dots. you can get both at most dollar stores. https://samplelist.com/nikon-4-16x42-prostaff-7-30mm-riflescope-demo-a-4.html Nikon 4-16x42 ProStaff 7 30mm Riflescope DEMO-A16323, Matte, Nikoplex, Side Focus Stock# SPL25749 $299.95https://samplelist.com/nikon-4-16x42-monarch-3-riflescope-demo-a-4.htmlNikon 4-16x42 Monarch 3 Riflescope DEMO-A6771, Matte, Mil-Dot, Side Focus Stock# SPL25739 $399.95 If you want to spend closer to 700.00 you could look at some of the 15x Conquest on the list. But I personally don't like the Conquest. I hate saying that cause the Ziess Diavari's are my go to favorites of all high end scopes.Good Luck! I have a tikka 223 varmint, it wears a SWFA SS3-9 and I like the setup. If it is strictly a range gun, the SS3-15 is also a good option, but I don’t like the turrets as much - if you plan to spin them, and the glass is not as good.
Another option is Sightron 6-24, but that is way more magnification than I prefer for any range a 223 can handle well. Lastly, if it came with rings, toss them in the trash, their rings are worse than terrible. Tikka makes about the best actions for the money, it was a wise choice. |

I like the Tikka in a .223 they come with two different barrel twist rates the 1 in 7 is for heavier bullets like 69 to 77 gr. I think we tend to over scope these rifles and while that may be fine on the target range it causes us to be way over scoped when dealing with a target that moves particularly coyotes. Right now I have two bolt action .223 rifles one has a 2-7 redfield scope and that is about the right scope for varmits the other has a Vortex Viper 6.5-20 which is way to much scope on the low end for anything but paper targets and I regret buying it. I would love to see bullet holes at 200 yards so I either use a spotting scope at 60X or drive up to the target or you could buy the camera system that lets you watch by video, or use the shoot and see targets or depending on light conditions a white paper target. Good luck finding the hole on a black target with a .22 caliber hole at 200 yds no matter what the scope. Yea I know some of you have better vision than I do but my point is that the spotting scope has its job that is to find the holes in the paper target. The rifle scope does not need to duplicate that job it is more important that it be effective in placing the bullet on target. So my suggestion is one of the Trijicon Accupoint scopes with the red post I have a 1-4 but a 1-6 would be better and a 2.5 - 12.5 well worth considering as are the 2.5-10 and 3-9. Its amazing how accurate the 1-4 actually is.

Getting something decent that will show you bullet holes at 200 yards for $700 is almost impossible.
If you can get Sightron S3 6-24x50 for that amount of money, that is your best bet. Otherwise, I would be looking at SWFA SS 3-15x42 and Athlon Ares 4.5-27x50, depending on which magnification range you prefer on the low end. ILya

Thanks for the input. Seeing the bullet holes really isn't that important and I probably should have omitted that. Clear glass at the upper end of the magnification will serve me much better.
I will take a look at the suggestions you guys have made. Thanks |

Then stay with the 3-15x42 or similar range of magnifications. It is a good general purpose configuration. ILya

3-15 or 3-12 is really a very good scope for a lot of applications in my view.

I went with a Burris Fullfield 2 6.5-20x50mm. The local gun shop owner where I bought the Tikka made me a great deal. Not too keen on the entire eyepiece turning when adjusting the magnification. Looking forward to see how well this set up will work.
Thanks for all the input. |
