First, welcome. Next, in instances such as this, google is your friend. The short answer is yes, both LE and military do use red dots on pistols. SF included. If the genesis of the question is, "if military and LE are doing it, should I be?", the answer is very complicated. As someone who runs a few pistols with red dots in defensive use, there are huge advantages (faster on target, higher degree of precision at longer ranges, great for aging eyes that don't grab the front site as well as they once could) and a few big, big disadvantages (batteries die at the worst possible time, and you have to completely retrain on basic handgun site picture - without site alignment.) I believe they are the wave of the future, eventually displacing irons altogether - at least for primary use. There are those that disagree with me on this, most of them love their M1 Garand and cannot believe a battle rifle would ever have an electronic site. |

The trend in fighting handguns is to have micro red dot sights with co-witnessed iron sights. That gives you all the advantages of the irons with the additional redundancy of having irons in case the battery dies.
As is usually the case, this started with competition shooters and then proliferated to various "elite" units within the different militaries around the world and law enforcement agencies. Now there is increased adoption among the civilians. Rank and file LEOs will likely be the last to adopt largely due to bureaucratic stupidity and inertia. Given how robust and long lasting micro red dot sights are, I think battery longevity is no longer an issue. I have three Shield RMS sights (one regular and two RMSc) and I have yet to see a dead battery on any of them. RMSc is fairly new, but my RMS has been working great for quite some time now. ILya

I have not run any but I do use tritium sights and a green laser on a couple of handguns. I want them fast and reliable.

Why the fascination with what forces are using them?
Try Google. |

Give a man a fish... Government contracts are searchable, that will get you MUCH info. Tier 1 and Tier 2 groups have significant freedom to choose gear, so "issued" is less a thing with them; though there is core gear, and there are contracts for that. Lastly, and again, google is your friend. There exist many sources on what LE and military are using, the answers exist broadly beyond the bounds of OpticsTalk. Beware of secret squirrel black operations mall ninjas answering such questions. As the saying goes, there are 2,500 SEALs at any given time, and I've met all 15,000 of them.
