I'm looking for a little help with a potential problem before I purchase an SWFA SS HD 5-20x50. I want to buy this scope to put on an M1A, and other than the newer Nightforce scopes (I.e., ATACR), the SS is the only scope that I believe can hold up sitting on an M1A. However, I occasionally come across posts on other boards that lump the SS in with other variable scopes that "blur out" when the maximum zoom power is used. I can't determine if people are just saying this without even using the SS scope in question. I checked several threads on this board but did not find that issue addressed. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I have owned 3 different 5-20x SS scopes and none of mine blurred out at any mag. IMO they are a great scope all around. Just so you know, the 3-9x SS was originally designed to be used on a M1A. It was designed to hold up to the recoil of that particular rifle.

Can you clarify if the "blurring out" is stated as a scope thing or as a function of the rifle destroying the optic? I've run several 5-20s with no such issues. Ever. And I've scoped a few M1As (with plenty of other issues but) not with that issue. When it comes to bomb-proof, Nightforce is kinda the gold standard, but SWFA isn't far behind. Have you run 20X scopes previously? What manner of shooting are you doing that you need 20X? And is your M1A set up for a scope or are you using an aftermarket mount? That is a tough gun to mount a scope on and shoot well. Or it was for me.

I'm using a Sadlak steel mount. I've had three M1As in the Supermatch configuration and I have used optics and Sadlak mounts on all of them. I never had much trouble with the scope or the mount. I would love to have a Nightforce ATACR 7-35x56, but I don't want to spend that much on another scope. I have a couple of really nice scopes that sit on my custom bolt action rifles. I'm trying to get by with a scope that doesn't crush the $3K mark.

When I say "blur out" I mean when some scopes are dialed up to the highest magnification the image gets blurry. I've owned 3 scopes over the years that did that. I had two Bushnell tactical scopes that were 6-24x56. Both of them got blurry when dialed to 24X. I had to back up to around 22X and the image became clear again. It was a scope issue. Neither had been mounted on a rifle, they were brand new.

With no good scope should you have a blurry image at any magnification, making a few assumptions. NF ATACR is a huge scope, so it will need to sit high, which is a challenge more than the usual challenge of mounting a scope on an M1A. I don't spend much time bench shooting so >20X is not an ideal magnification for me. I find, in all but the most passive and stable environments, that I shoot better at 15X than 20X. I wouldn't worry about putting a 1000-yard scope on it unless you plan on it being a 1000-yard gun.

The whole idea of putting a scope on an M1a is one of lasting grief and frustration. The only optic that I have had on my M1a that I really liked was a Compact ACOG 1.5x same thing in a 3x didnt have enough eye relief. I have had two scope mounts the Smith Enterprise mount was the better of the two. cheek weld is always the issue if you do anything but iron sights and I attached a cheek piece. Hind sight being 20 20 I would not have don that I would have kept it iron sights and in fact Mine is back to iron sights now and the very expensive Smith Enterprise ACOG base sits with the spare rings. If one was willing to go to a Sage stock system that might be more reasonable but with a wood stock just stay with iron sights and buy a bolt gun to scope. Or don't and spend a few years of frustration working with it, I for one must learn the hard way it would seem. One other option is an Aimpoint 9000L on a forward mounted rail like the Scout version runs with rail in front of the action. I'm sure it can be done because I know GAPrecision has modified some for miltary use but anything M1a is spendy to get right.

As for the 5-20x50 SS I have that on a Remmington bolt gun it is a very nice scope and I have had no problems with mine.

I haven't had the problems that some have had scoping my M1As. The stock is a McMillan 3A - saddle type adjustable cheek piece and adjustable LOP. I can't see the danged front post anymore. I've found a way to get the front sight of my pistols into a semblance of focused...not totally crisp, but not a blur anymore either. I've tried to pick up the front sight blade through the NM aperture rear sight. It is a waste of ammo for me to try to target anything that way.
