Cleaning out my ammo bunker, I found an unmarked Ziploc bag of about 500 hollow-point boat-tail projectiles. Caliper sized at .31 diameter, weight exactly 175gr., copper jacket, no steel content. They look exactly like SMKs. Is there any way to tell what they are for real, or should I just relegate them to plinking? |

Stumped everyone, eh? I think what I'll do is melt down the whole pile and make a nice artistic doorstop. Just kidding. Actually, I came up with a plan which is so simple I'm amazed no one else thought of it:

Do you have a 7.62x54R? I think their diameter is actually .310.

Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.

Good suggestion. However, I replaced the dying battery in my digital caliper, and the mystery projectile now shows at .3085", same as measuring an SMK 175gr HPBT from an original Sierra box. And interestingly, same as a milsurp 7.62x54R round, that I had on hand, measures with the same caliper. - - - BTW: According to Lyman reloading manual, the 'standard' 7.62x54R projectile is typically .3105, although it's not uncommon for a 7.62x54R rifle to shoot a .308 projectile very nicely.

Wow, what a find, 500 .308,175gr. SMK. A few years ago I bought some mil. surp. .308, 175gr SMK bullets that had been pulled with very light pull marks if any marks at all. They were crazy cheap compared to new, and shot just as good if not better.
