I have been shopping for a long range hunting scope for awhile now and have narrowed it down to 3 choices based off of price/performance(from what ive read). I am setting up on a Browning X-Bolt 300 Win Mag for long shots(1k yds) in KY. Any feedback would be much appreciated. The scopes Ive narrowed down to are below but still open to other suggestions. Light retention in those last 15 minutes before dark is important. 2k is about my limit though. Thank you!
Sig Saur Tango 6 5-30 X56 - for around $2000 Vortex Razor HD Gen II 4.5-27 X56 - around $2000 Athlon Cronus btr 4.5-29 X 56- around $1500 Athlon Ares ETR 4.5-30 x 56 - around $1100 Also, if someone knows of better prices please point me in the right direction!

I would suggest checking out Ilya’s site... Optics Thoughts. He reviews and recommends scopes.

Peripheral questions first:
1. Do you frequently shoot at 1000 yards? 2. Do you plan to take shots on game at 1000 yards? 3. Have you used > 20X rifle scopes in field conditions previously? Of the list, I have significant experience with only the Vortex Gen2 (mine is the 3-18) which I heartily recommend. My primary long range hunter (I do not advocate long range shots on game unless you are very experienced, very confident in the shot, and have miles of visibility. An injured animal 1000 yards away takes a bit of time to walk to, and that supposes the animal isn’t increasing that distance as you advance) is an AIAWM in 300WM with a Kahles K624i (the scope, I do not recommend unless you shoot lefty as often as righty) and it is a very accurate rig. Even with that, I close as much distance as I can before taking shots. My Gen2 Vortex sits on a 243AI that was built for pronghorn hunting, it is a laser, I worked up rounds that are tailored to long range, and I shot the rifle at expected ranges to be sure the bullets went where I wanted and my adjustments are correct. Finally, long range is work - LOTS of work. You need time on the gun and scope with the ammo you will be using and at ranges you will use it. There are no shortcuts, no programs to tell you what to do. If you are an experienced marksman and committed to putting in the effort to do this, great; if not, set up the gun for shorter ranges, and become proficient in that. Or get a Trackingpoint. |

Ares ETR is new, so it is hard for me to say for sure how it stacks up until I look at it.
Ares BTR is a very good scope, especially for the money. Razor is the most established of your options with excellent track record, so it is hard to go wrong with this one. Tango6 is the most feature rich, so it kinda depends on what is important for you, but it is also newish on the market. I really like Sig's DevL reticle and I find the electronic level very useful. With all that said, you sorta have to pick your poison. What is most important to you? To add other options to the mix: if this is a gun that will be carried a lot, weight makes a difference, so you may want to consider Vortex AMG 6-24x50. It is a lot lighter (I may be selling mine soon, if you decide to go this way) and give you a lot of reach. If you are willing to spend some money, there is always Tangent Theta TT315M 3-15x50. It is also comparatively light for a precision scope and the magnification range is a bit lower, but optically and mechanically, it is as good as modern scopes get. I have one of those and that is one of those things that will be pried from my cold dead hands some day. I go through a lot of scopes as I test them and this is the one that I have never had even a slightest inclination to sell. ILya
