Hello Everyone, Glad to have found such good folks that know what they are talking about. Here are my issues: i have a Wilson Combat 300 Hamr. I have a Sig Sauer Whiskey 3 on it. Do you all think that is enough. On my Ar i have a Vortex red dot so i know im good there. I need to find a scope for my Aero Precison AR 10 .308 I was also looking for recomendations for my 16" .458 Socom Thank you all for talking your time to read this and give me some valuable insight and opinions.

Enough in what way?

1. What will you be doing with the AR10? (And don't say, "shooting", please.) 2. What will you be doing with the SOCOM? (And don't say, "shooting", please.) 3. What is your budget? 4. What is your experience with AR platforms, optics, marksmanship, and all that together? In short, I can make recommendations for both, I have a few AR10s, never a SOCOM but I definitely understand the application; but those recommendations mean nothing if you are building each gun for a certain thing and I make recommendations based on another thing. As an example, if the AR10 is a 22" range gun, the recommendation is very different than if the AR10 is a 16" close- to mid-range field gun. With a few answers, we should be able to help. And welcome.

I would like to get proficient with long range shots with the ar 10 since it’s too heavy to carry around everywhere. Maybe 300-500 yards.
With the socom max of 100 yards. I saw a video with a guy using a 2x8x32. The sig seems to be good at 100 on the 300 hamr I’m just looking I want to shoot the 300 out to maybe three hundred yards. Coyotes probably. |

Budget? The AR10 will be a range gun? So bench shooting? On the Wilson 300 hamr, I'd say a 1-4X or 1-6X should do the trick out to 300. More than that (like a 3-9) sacrifices up close shots, and a red dot isn't ideal for 200+ yards. On the caliber, best I can tell, it is a 300Blackout with a little slower twist, 1:10 rather than the blackout 1:7 or 1:8. In their marketing, I'd call it a bit apples-to-oranges, since the Blackout is a super or sub gun (so optimized, kinda, for both) while the Hamr is a super-only gun. Wilson generally makes good stuff. Lastly, get a decent mount for the AR10 and the 300. Going cheap on the mount is a headache waiting to strike. I have had great luck with American Defense recon mounts, it is my go-to mount, almost always in stock, locks up tight, and I have yet to have one fail me. You could also bump up to an Aadland mount, but they are pricier and hard to find in stock.

Budget? I have a SWFA SS 3-15X42 on an AR 10 SASS and it works at the range and at 300-600yds, but if I had the money I would like a Vortex Razor 3-18X50, or a March, or Schmidt and Bender. It makes a difference.

Which Whiskey3 do you have? There a few different versions.
I played fairly extensively with the 3-9x50 version since a friend of mine wanted to set it up on his Grendel and I thought it was a very nice scope for the money. It stayed zeroed and adjusted surprisingly consistently. 458 SOCOM: I have one of these and it is set-up with Vortex Razor HD LH 1.5-8x32, which seems to fit the cartridge really well. For extending the range of the AR-10 out to a few hundred yards, something in the 3-15x range is a good option, but if it is strictly a range gun, you always have an option of going to higher magnifications. THe SS 3-15x42 recommended above is a good option. You should really define how much you are willing to spend. That will really help make appropriate recommendations. ILya

Thanks for all the awesome advice so far. I have two optics to buy and i dont have a ton of money i was thinking maybe mid $200 on each, if that is too cheap then i will have to buy them one at a time. So far maybe im just fooling myself, by saying that number. i dont know. i reload all my own ammo, but now its down to the optics part of it. What do you guys think of a 1-6x24?

A decent mount could easily eat up a good chunk of that budget. For an AR10, the only think in that range is an SWFA SS10X.

That is indeed, not a lot of money.
If you like Whiskey3, you can just get a 2.5-7x32 version for the 458 socom. It is moderately inexpensive. For the AR-10, your least expensive viable option is the fixed power SS in either 10x42 or 12x42 configuration. ILya

i like both so i believe that is what i will go with 10x42 and the 2.5-10x32 is reasonably priced too.

Great, let us know what you think about the SS. I would do 10X, it does more things well, in my opinion.

Hey guys I went a little crazy this morning and I don’t know if I should have done it but I did it. Now I’m just not sure of 1. If it’s a legit scope. And 2. What would I mount it to. https://www.ebay.com/itm/ATN-night-vision-scope/232927930909?hash=item363b962a1d:g:SvEAAOSwmrpbm860#vi__app-cvip-panel

If it's a toy and you won't be disappointed if it turns out to be terrible, sure. ATN is not known for quality, and $200 night vision will disappoint in all but maybe the most favorable conditions. Don't expect much actual utility from this. Does this purchase preclude a rifle scope purchase?

I bought the scopes you guys recommend this morning. I just got silly and was dazzled by “night vision”. I know dumb.
