Just picked up a pair of used Swarovski SLC WB 8x42. Was setting the diopter in my basement by taping a typed up letter on the wall at about 40 feet. I got the left eye focused as sharp as possible then covered the left lense and used the diopter to get the right set. Once i was done and went to look through both eyes of the bino and i had to re adjust the focus wheel to get the object in focus when using both eyes. It was really blury when I was looking with both eyes in the exact setting I had just had the binos focused with individual eyes. Can anyone explain this?

First off, set the diopter outside at a longer distance, preferable 100 yards or more. Also, you don't need cover the left lens when setting the right side diopter, simply close your left eye. Good luck, give it another try, I think that will help a lot. I suspect it is not the binocular.

The diopter ring is the servant, not the master. Focus the left side (while just STARING ... let the bino do the work) then focus the right eye—also while just staring. The numerals are only useful if accurate—frequently they're not! Your body will try to accommodate; don't let it. That's why staring is so important. This is covered thoroughly in BINOCULARS: Fallacy & Fact, pages 24-26. Bill
