Ok does anyone have experience with a thermal scope. I’m going to buy one in the next few months.
I want to hunt Coyotes and longer ranges 200-300 yds and raccoon 50-100. I like the trijicon hunter mk2. But their pricey |

"Pricey" and "thermal" go together, especially when "good" or "useful" are added to the mix. |

I have a lot of experience with thermal scopes. Get ready to spend a lot of money. There are no inexpensive options for what you’re wanting to do. To shoot at relatively small targets at 200 yards and further with decent resolution, you can expect to spend $4500 minimum.

The trijicon IR Hunter MKII 35mm and the Trijicon Reap-IR 35mm are both great choices. The reap is lighter weight and smaller and uses a joystick to navigate the menu. The display screen is also sslliiggghhttllyy better. It also has 4 different zero save options, meaning you can zero it to 4 different guns. The D-loc mount does really well at returning to zero and is easy to mount and remove without any tools.
That said thermal drift is a real thing. Your zero can and will shift over time as the weather/seasons change. If you zero it in 100 degree humid weather and then hunt with it on a brisk cold night in the winter, your bullet impact may be several inches off. FWIW. The ir hunter is bigger, bulkier, more heavy duty, and uses turrets on the top and side of the scope to navigate the menu. The design of this optic was originally meant to be sold for military contracts. Supposedly you could drive over it with a vehicle and it would still work. So it’s very rugged, but I damn sure wouldn’t suggest testing that out after spending that kind of money. That said, the reap is still really tough. If you really want to spend some cash and get the best option for longer distance, look at the 60mm ir hunter MKIII or the 60mm reap-ir. |
