I think I have narrowed my choice of a new scope down to two, the SWFA SS 3-15x42 and the Nikon Black FX1000 4-16x50SF-MOA.
It seems the two are pretty equal and have what I am looking for in my optics, 30mm tube/MOA reticle/decent glass/right price range and what all reviews I have seen dependable. My research shows both have good customer service. So the question is does one have any advantage over the other that I am missing? I have scopes from both company's currently (neither being for long range or having target turrets) and have been very happy with both so I am somewhat familiar with them. Right now the SWFA is %15 off but Cyber weekend is almost upon us so price wise I think they will still be competitive in that market. I realize they are not my NF NXS but I don't want to shell out that kind of cash at the moment and I really don't think I will be disappointed with either . What are the opinions of the internet (LOL)?

What's it going on? For what will it be used? Without that, none of this will matter much. The SWFA scopes have always tracked true for me, which is the most important characteristic of a scope, in my opinion. I don't love the turrets, but the price is right, and I like the reticle. I don't know anything about the Nikon. I do like that SWFA is quick to deal with issues with their scope, I know many large optics companies take their time in dealing with problems, SWFA moves quickly and intentionally when there is an issue.

Good point, my brain ran with what I wanted I guess.
20" heavy barrel Remington 700 in .308. Range 100-700 or so. Just a plinking rifle and back up for hunting. I started off with a 700 I bought from Dick's, don't ever buy guns from this crooked company (when I got it I was really pissed its just an ADL with a heavy barrel not Remington's Long range model). Well since it turned out to not be what I wanted (I really wanted a 7-08 but with the Black Friday special and $ burning a hole in my pocket I bought it anyway. The Long Range model has a B&C stock and the X-mark trigger my brain missed this when I was looking at it but it was advertised as the Long Range model) I cut 6" off the barrel, put an X-mark off my 300WM and a MP Hunter stock on it. So now I guess its kind of a tacticool style rifle. I actually shoot this rifle more than any of my other ones at the moment and currently houses a Nikon Buckmaster scope but I think I am going to move that over to my dedicated hunting rifle (I actually like this scope more than my Luepold vrix III). Over the last couple of years I have been replacing the cheaper scopes.

I'm not familiar with the Nikon. The SS scopes, I have had most of the models they make. I want to point out two things that may or may not make a difference to you. The SS 3-9 has one centered screw when removed the turret can be reset. I like that better than the three hex screw system of the 3-15, the HD 5-20 also has the single screw design so does the HD 10x42. I really like the size of the 3-9 better also. The other thing I want to point out is that Nikon scopes typically have fairly limited amount of internal adjustment like 50 to 60 MOA where every model of the SS scopes exceeds 100 MOA of internal adjustment which makes a difference at long range. One of the guys on here a while back was running his 3-9 SS at 1000 yds with good success, I usually don't run past 600 because that is the range I have the best access to. When I think 20 in rifle the 3-9 SS sure sounds like a winner to me. I realize there is no adjustable parallax on that model but I have not needed it. If you really feel a need for more than 9x consider the 5-20 SS but also consider size. Often the low end of the scope is more important than the high end of the magnification. The other brand besides SS that seems to have great customer service is Vortex.

https://www.swfa.com/nikon-4-16x50-black-fx1000-ffp-30mm-riflescope-2.html Looks like it has 90 moa of internal adjustment and the MOA version also has a MOA based reticle all of which sounds positive and the Zero Stop is a useful feature it can be easy to get lost in the dial and be a turn off. |

Nikon Black FX scopes are fairly new, so it is not clear what the track record for them will look like. I have not done a thorough test, but I have seen them briefly. Best I can tell, they are based on the Gen 1 PST scopes.
I had a rather heated exchange with a Nikon rep on another forum who swears up and down that these are original Nikon designs that noone has ever used. Based on what I have seen so far, I do not think I believe him, but I do not have enough information to flat out call him a liar, so I sorta reserve final judgement until I spend more time with these scopes. So far, I have seen three, albeit briefly. One was excellent. One was a piece of manure. Another one was somewhere in the middle, so I really have no idea which one was normal and which was an aberration. ILya

Great replies guys thank you.
So what made the one manure? They are supposed to be pretty positive on clicks, glass good and track excellent. What were the issues you were seeing in them?

Optical quality just wasn't there and clicks were very mushy.
I never had a chance to check tracking with any of these. ILya
