Recently picked up a used M1A in a chassis system with mounts and all. I put a SS 3-9 on it with mark 4 rings I had laying around and went out to zero this past weekend. Setup pictured below..... Ran into a problem. Scope is maxed out in elevation to get to a 100yd zero..... I have limited knowledge on these mounts and don't know where to start to address the issue.... any help is appreciated. |

I had a similar mount on an M1A match a few years back, ended up selling it because I couldn't get a scope/mount setup that would work to my liking. Doesn't Aadland make rings that adjust cant? Usually with Leupold rings I'd say flip them (back to front, front to back) in an effort to not tolerance-stack; however, on an M1A, which was not designed for a scope, it is a whole different ballgame. If things like this are going to bug you, my advice will center on 2 options: 1. Remove the scope, shoot open sites or with a red dot. 2. Sell it, buy an AR10, live happily ever after. The M1s are a sexy beast, for sure, and it is a great battle rifle. For precision and semi-precision shooting, they can be a huge pain in the ass.

This same scope and rings were on a FN 308 bolt gun and had zero issue.... so thinking its the mount setup on the M1A but not sure what to do to figure it out.

Cheek weld will be an issue. Also, there was an option several years ago for Springfield M1s to send them back to SA and have them install a full-length rail. It was $500 at the time (when I was trying to scope a SOCOM) and it might still be an option, if that is an SA. They are awesome guns, but scoping them well is a challenge. Ans suppressing them is a little awkward too.

http://shop.aadmount.com/Select-A-Slope_c6.htm Not cheap, and won't help with the cheek weld, but will address the slope issue.

I come to the conclusion that his will not be a sub moa gun and i'm ok with that. This is a fun gun to me... hitting 12" gongs out to 1000yds is my goal. Not precision work. Just want to be able to get it to zero and still have enough elevation to dial that in. |

I'd start looking at some manner of shimming. Once the deed is done, if it is solid, keeping zero should be fine. Does your gun have a match barrel? Most of the M1s I played with were really 2-3MOA guns - unless you print 10 3-shot groups and cherry-pick the best one and call that the "gun's capabilities". Put a match barrel in it and that drops. There is a reason for the $$$ difference between a standard and a national match.

I agree with RC. I've shot a standard issue with a NM barrel and NM sights, and a super match with hand picked parts, heavy barrel, NM sights, stock, op rod, spring guide, etc. and built by a trained Ky State Police armorer in high power matches, and the difference in rifles is night and day. At 600yds the standard would keep most rounds in the black, but the super match could keep them all in the 10 ring and most in the X if it weren't for the jerk behind the trigger. |

Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.

Sadlak makes a good mount, that's what Mike McDonald used to recommend. Give 'em a call, see what they say. AS RC said, biggest problem will be check-weld solution.

I did email them Mike... wondering if the side dial has anything to do with it. |

found an addendum PDF on sadlak's website I will try this weekend... that cam washer does play a big role I guess.... wish their PDFs contained a photo diagram to help but I'll see if I can figure it out.
