Greeting Everyone! I'm new here, desperately looking for help ID'ing this scope.
Here's what I've been told by an old timer at Cabelas, FWIW. -WW1 era -most likely a sighting scope for some type of artillery, not a rifle scope -leather case, while cool, likely not originally paired with this scope Markings on scope: Pernox 3 1/2X C.P. Goerz Berlin Any help greatly appreciated! Trying to figure out how to attach photos...stand by

Gerry,
Thanks for this! Yes, picture on the ebay listing does indeed look like my scope. The dimensions on mine seem a bit shorter than the one show there, hard to tell- but absolutely same general layout. If so, I'd be very excited to learn that it is indeed a rifle scope- I would love to try it out. Follow up question: which period-correct rifle might I have an excuse to purchase?! http://s1383.photobucket.com/user/Tschwarz88/library/ I still cannot figure how photos are to be inserted here, but if the above link does not work- I have lots of photos I can email if anyone is willing to share email address. |

It seems that these riflescopes were converted during WW1: http://www.monocular.info/goerz_brk6x23.htm I don´t think it´s the other way around, that the scope (monocular) was of military origin and then converted for civilian use. If the scope is in good nick AND you have a gunsmith that can mount (adjust) the claw system for windage (maybe also elevation) - Why not a Mauser ? Gerry Atric

The problem with vintage/antique scopes is the claw mounts, you have to have matching base blocks on your rifle. The chances of this are pretty slim. What I do is strip out the optics and take of the claw mounts , fit modern scope rings, either 19 or 11m fitting to the slide size on the rifle, reassemble. I this way I can fit old quality scopes to fairly modern rifles. However, some times , in the case of military WW1 & 2 Rifles you have to fit on base blocks as well. In the UK we can find old German scopes advertised for sale but they are expensive. If any one has a Winchester A5 scope for sale I would appreciate knowing about it.
