Looking to replace my scope mounts for h and r handi rifle in 444. Its got some weaver aluminum rings and bases that really has held up well for several years but I want a change out scopes so I figure it would be a good time to upgrade mounts. I have been looking through swfa's mount section and wow things have changed alot in the scope mount market. Lots of options for sure. Suggestions?

What is the existing setup: dovetail rings, pic rail, etc? My handi has a pic rail and rings are whatever you have or want. I tend to go to talley if they re direct-mount and Seekins or Badger if they are pic rail - but there are far less expensive options that work well. What scope is going on and what is your budget? A good friend of mine had a 444 revolver several years ago, I would prefer the handi to the revolver, for sure! That thing was a handful!

Existing setup in nikon monarch ucc 3x9x40 with weaver 2 PC aluminum bases with the slot and aluminum rings not really sure the brand but it was pretty much mount set up for thousands of these rifles back several years ago when Mississippi laws changed and these handi rifles could be used during primative weapon season .
Back then wasnt much of a choice mount wise but I know there are more options these days. I just want something more rugged so preferably steel. I have saw a few of these rifles with the dead nuts mounts but I will never ever use those ugly things on anything of mine. |

Yea, I bought a 45/70 for same purpose. Dump the stamped aluminum stuff and get a good rail and good rings, they need not be expensive.

Steel doesn't necessarily mean stronger either. Well made aluminum mounts like Talley mounts are just as strong will easily hold up to your 444. I honestly prefer aluminum as then you don't have to worry about them rusting when you get them wet. Most of the finish on factory steel mounts don't hold up that well and they end up rusting. Even the high dollar mounts and rings. You would think when you spend $250+ on a set of Badger rings and a base that it wouldn't get surface rust all over them during a hunt in the snow. Kind of frustrating when it happens. But spend $40 on a set of Talley ring mounts and you never have to worry about that. Personal experience there. Same thing has happened with IOR steel rings, TPS steel rings, and Leupold steel mounts.
