For Christmas the kids gave me a down payment to invest in a new grill. Looking at some of the pellet grills. Traeger, Pit Boss, Louisiana grill, Camp Chef, Green Mountain and the list goes on. Prices stretch as far apart as the number of makers. Do any of you have one? Do you like it, What to look for that make one better than the crowd. Not planning to abandoning my old fashion ways yet. Just looking for smaller simpler quicker way to get acceptable results , for small 2 -4 person meals.

Lile I have a Traeger and I love it. If your looking for quicker they are NOT quicker. They are very very easy to use and results are great.

Quicker than my open pits. The pits are geared for cooking large volumes of meat. The pits are very time and labor intensive. No good for a steak or a pair of chickens. It is as much work for one chicken as it is for 50 chickens at one time. Wanting something that my wife can start up and operate from her wheelchair. The pellet grills look safer than charcoal or gas. Gas grills suck. How old is your Traeger?

It’s in its 3rd year.
Not good for steaks, it’s a smoker not a grill. That being said I have cooked a couple 32 ounce Tomahawk Ribeyes on it. I’ll send you a pic. |

It is hard to beat the old cast iron Habitchi for cooking steaks.

I have a charcoal grill, big green egg, and love it. It smokes pretty well, it cooks steaks great - nothing like natural charcoal flavor; it's only deficiency is in making pizzas - it cooks the crust well, but with no radiant heat from above, they get done on bottom and not on top. So, to solve that problem, my wife got me an uuni pizza oven for Christmas, it is a pellet pizza oven, and it works very well. My first outing was tough, the thing shot up in temp to way beyond where I wanted it. For general smoking/grilling, I like the egg, and there are many moderately priced versions now. They hold heat well, they are fairly easy to maintain, but are not pellet. It wasn't what you asked, but might help fill out the picture. It is an important decision, choose wisely.

My inlaws gave me this for christmas. https://www.traegergrills.com/shop/grills/portable-series/ranger-pellet-grill
I have used it 9 times now. Just steaks and burgers so far. Its not a full blow smoker, but it does smoke the meat a little while its being cooked. I have a pretty nice weber spirit grill and this things cooks way better meat than the weber. We cooked t bone steaks lst night and they were outstanding. It cooks completely even where my weber seems to have hot and cool spots depending where you put the meat. It is a small grill. You would barely be able to fit 3 t bones on it, probably 6 burgers. It cooks great though. Meat comes off incredibly juicey and very soft. It maxes out at 450 degrees so it doesn’t sear real well, but some far that hasn’t been needed it meat still stays very juicy. It comes with both a rack grill and a nice cast iton flat grill. I am guessing the hopper would keep it running for 3ish hours Setup is super easy. Once the pellets are primed as long as u keep the hopper topped off it just keeps feeding without the 5 minute prime cycle. It preheats in 10-15 minutes. I really like it. They bought us a small one so we can take it camping with us. They got my bro in law ine if the big smoker traegers andnit does a lot more for sure. But if u want simple, easy tonrun and maintain and small this is a good one to consider. Edited by supertool73 - January/21/2019 at 12:07 |

Lile, I also have a Weber Performer and I use real lump charcoal in that. It starts the charcoal with propane ( the little 1# tanks ) and it works great.
