My question is two fold. Part of it belongs here and part of it belongs in the firearms section. I recently had an opportunity to purchase a Diamondback DB10ELB in .308. It has a Magpul grip and CTR stock, 1:10, 18" stainless fluted barrel. That is all I know about it. I know scopes need to match the intended use. Part of the problem is I don't know what that will be. I purchased it because it was priced between "no brainer" and "I couldn't refuse". I also don't know what I can really expect for accuracy out of it. Does anyone have any experience with one of these and can tell me more about it or what I can expect? For the scope. I did read the recent thread on the AR10 with an intended target range of 0-500yds. I would think my intended range would be similar. In it, it was suggested to stay in the 3-15 mag range and an FFP scope. I am curious to why the Vortex PST Gen 2 3-15x44 was suggested and not the SWFA 3-15, and the differences between the two. Also, does anyone have any experience with the Nikon M-308. This would most likely just be a range gun, all though the possibility of hunting with it is always there, I do prefer to carry a bolt action. What kind of scenarios would it be good for and what optics would you use? Budget would be $500 or less. Accuracy has as much - if not more - to do with shooter as with gun. For most AR10s, I say expect 2 MOA and be happy when it is better. Additionally, AR10s are notoriously picky during break-in. The basic rule is to over-lube the BCG till it is very well broken in. When you think you have too much lube, you almost have enough. As a general rule. Next, the SS 3-15 would be a good option, but is more than you stated budget above. If the $500 is firm, the older version SS 10X would be a great option, to learn the gun and caliber. It is a great scope for the money, doesn't bust the bank, works well in your intended shooting ranges, and leaves money for mount and maybe a bipod. Next, ARs scope differently than do bolt guns, due to the differences in stock and action design. Be sure to mount your scope with something that is intended for an AR. I usually use American Defense recon mounts and have been very happy with them, though others work well too.

I have a 30MM Leupold mount on my 450 Bushmaster. I can tell you that in my case, I bought some Warne?? maybe or whatever 30MM rings, that were LOW, and they were to low. My scope is a 30MM 1-5 minox, and it was the eye piece that basically was hitting the top of the receiver.
I have been happy with the Leupold mount. I have the 2 piece Nikon ones for my 5.56 upper that has a 3-9-40 Leupold VX1 on it, and they have been very solid as well. |

Hey folks, Thanks for the replies. I do have a couple AR's and have used the Burris P.E.P.R mount on those and they worked well. Heavy, but solid. I would go that route again or maybe the SWFA S.A.L.T version just to try it. I know there are a lot of good mounts out there. As far as the optic, I wouldn't be opposed to stretch the budget to the SS 3-15, at least to the demo B model. I'm not in a hurry, so hopefully when I'm ready there will be another on the sample list. Then there is the whole MOA vs MilRad debate to figure out as well. Like I said, I didn't really know what the capabilities of the rifle are so I wasn't sure how to scope it. Obviously the human factor is important, but I don't know if it's shooting a 2" group if that is me or the rifle. I didn't buy it for a specific purpose, just want to have some fun with it. Thanks,

I looked at the Burris I think. The gun shop only had 2 that were 30mm and the Leupold one is aluminum, and much lighter than the Burris.
My gun isn't bad considering it has a bullish barrel since its 450 bushmaster. I did add a Magpul CTR stock so I could lock it in place. I used the MS1 sling and the QD mount in the stock and added one to the rail on top. It carries really nice. Something to be said for hands free carry and not having to worry about it slipping off my shoulder.

So, I'm not in a hurry to scope this thing, but I'm tempted. How important is side focus on a fixed 10x scope? Samplelist has a SS10x in matching MOA reticle and turrets for $260.00. Is the side focus worth the extra cash or should I just pull the trigger on this one?

For the money, there is no better scope available.
Take the rest of your $$ and invest in a good match trigger. Or that is what I would do. |

It is just a matter of preference. Personally I would go with the rear focus and save the money or put it towards ammo or a good trigger.
