Do you wear your glasses when using your binoculars, or do you tune your binos for your particular stigmatism? It's obvious that some do wear glasses while glassing, I was hoping to get some insight into what works best for some. Thanks, Walt

Hi, Walt:
You can’t “tune” a binocular to reduce astigmatism. Yours can be corrected by your optometrist; the binocular’s must be corrected in the design lab. But realize optical aberrations are not independent of each other. In correcting astigmatism to your level of acceptance, they might be changing 3 others to levels outside the acceptance of most observers. That said, you CAN have tiny lenses or contacts—with your Rx—fitted on to the oculars. It can be pricy, but it is doable and has been done. Bill |

Hi, all: Although I have tried THREE times to edit the “on to” above to “onto,” I have failed to do so. Each time I would press the appropriate key, the screen would revert to the original with the same error. And when trying to use the quick reply feature to type this, I found no keystroke would be recorded. Thus, this being done on Word and I am hoping to be able to insert it. Bill |

Bill, with all the strange and weird things you have happen, it's likely either some funky stuff going on with your browser settings or the dude behind the keyboard.

The dude behind the keyboard has been behind keyboards since there were keyboards to be behind. Bill

Maybe try installing Chrome on your Mac just to see if that helps with any of the funky issues you have.

The diopter adjustment allows you compensate for differences between your eyes (correct?) Perhaps this is different from astigmatism? What else would cause a difference between your eyes other then astigmatism? Perhaps I asked another stupid question? Anyways, I got my 1st glasses @ age 56, very minor issue with farsight. Nearsight has been gone for years. I was messing around with my binoculars, and thought they were working pretty good for me without my glasses. Does anyone else not wear their prescription glasses when glassing?

I don’t wear glasses with my binoculars. I don’t have astigmatism but I am short sighted. The diopter adjustment works well for me. I guess it depends on how severe your astigmatism is since the diopter adjust can’t correct it.

I take my glasses off all the time when using binoculars. I like the view much better than wearing glasses and rolling or twisting down the eyecups. I get a far better FOV.
I have presbyopia. |

The focus (diopter rings) correct for focus along the Z axis—the axis of the line of sight to the target. It does not correct for astigmatism. That said, astigmatism may change with focus. On one side of focus, a point source may spike vertically with spiking on the other side of focus being horizontal. There’s no “free lunch” in optics.

I am a glasses wearer and have astigmatism pretty badly. (Horribly short sighted as a result but with less than 1 correction on both sides).
I set my binos up to work with my glasses that largely take out my astigmatism and use binos with glasses. It is VERY annoying having to have glasses in front of your eye and not between walking around, scanning and looking through scope Scrummy

I'm nearsighted, and need to wear glasses when I'm driving or looking at distances.
I take my glasses off when using my (Zeiss) binoculars. It eliminates an extra layer of glass, and results in a clearer view. I find it quicker and easier than than rolling the eye cups up or down. I also prefer and use scopes that have a fast focus eyepiece. I can quickly adjust them for use with or without glasses. I missed out on an easy win in a hunting trip target contest, because I had left my glasses in the cabin. I was using a scope that was set up for glasses, and didn't have a fast focus eyepiece. Lesson learned! |

Whether wearing glasses or not, one of the most important things the observer must learn is how to stare. Only with the eye relaxed will the focus mechanism do its job. The observer is usually in a hurry—no one wins, here. Thus, the ciliary muscles will stretch or compress the eyelens (faster than one can use a focus mechanism) to bring things to a focus that should be brought to a focus by a focus mechanism and a relaxed eye. That is why so many people fiddle, and fiddle, and fiddle with the focus wheel trying to get the best—but ever elusive—focus.

I don't use my glasses either. I can't see squat up close, like reading, and I have a minor distance correction and astigmatism.
I noticed the other day one side was blurry and the other wasn't so I did some adjusting on the eyepiece on the blurry one, and all of a sudden it was good to go. |

That would be the diopter adjustment. It is there because iur eyes may see differently from each other. So you can adjust each eye independently and once that is done you can use the center focus for distance adjustments.
