While I'm a little surprised they didn't go with the M17, I'll have to say, the M18 is no slouch from my experience.
It also makes sense to go with the compact pistol.
When LPD was looking for our first semi auto pistol, we looked at Sig, Beretta, and S&W. This was in the era before Glock (BG). Since we were a S&W dept. S&W had an edge in the selection process. At first the thought was to issue the full size 6506 to uniformed officers and the compact 6906 to plain clothes units. In testing, the compact 6906 turned out to be as good if not better than the full size pistol, so it was decided to go with the 6906 for everyone. It turned out to be a good decision. both 12 and 15 rd. magazines fit the 6906, and S&W included adapters for the 15 rd. mags, to give the feel of a full size grip. Couldn't have done that with both 6509 and 6906 pistols.

Well my M18 (really a Massivetwoschits compliant P320C) passed my accidental drop test.
I was carrying a bunch of stuff in the house the other day and one of the items was my P320C that was in a holster with no retention device, tucked under my arm. just after I closed the door and turned around to start down the 8 steps to ground level, to my horror, I saw the Sig fly out of the holster and land on the 5th step down, then bounce off another step or two, then land on the concrete floor on the sights. Almost felt like I dropped the baby. It never went bang, it had the up grade installed. When I picked it up and examined it, the grip had a scuff or two, and the safety was in the fire position; I keep it on safe with a round in the chamber. I was kind of disappointed that the safety came off, but not that the pistol didn't go off. I cleaned the scuffs off and test fired the pistol the next day and it functioned with no issues and there was no shift in point of impact.
Yeah, I had a brain fart carrying the thing in the house and feel stupid, but I'm impressed that it passed my stupidity without issue.

1. I admire your humility in posting this.
2. I will never be in close proximity to an armed you.

Additionally, that is negligence, the stupid starts when FMF Marines get to wring it out away from bean counters.

That hurt Jeff. I'm the range NAZI when it comes to firearms safety, but I was hot, tired, in a hurry, and didn't realize the holster had lost the grip it once had. Not something I would do with others around, but I was by myself, and it certainly will not happen again. If this disqualifies me from being in your proximity while armed, then I guess we'll never meet.

I am always amazed when people discuss "comfort" and 'training" in the same sentence. When hot and tired and sweaty and sore and irritable, that is exactly when the best training takes place.

On the drop, it happens. I can't recall off-hand having dropped a weapon, but I would bet it has happened. It stuck in your brain due to the "it might discharge it is hits rear-site first and - of sh*t - it's gonna hit site-first!" Absent that whole issue, it wouldn't have registered as much of anything, I bet.

Glad you didn't shoot yourself in the face, keep up the good work.

On the drop, we always trained, that for whatever reason, if you dropped your weapon, don't try to catch it. You stand a better chance of having a discharge trying to catch it, than you do just letting it hit the ground. I knew an officer that tried to catch his Colt snub nose when he fumbled it, and shot himself in the lower leg. He was off for several months. I've seen a lot of pistols dropped and tossed accidentally during training, and none of them went bang, because they didn't try or couldn't catch them. It was always an excellent unsolicited and unplanned demonstration of the pistol's internal drop safeties.
I brought this incident up because of the reputation the Sig P320 got before the upgrade was made concerning the drop test and discharges.
It will be interesting to see if the Marines can make the M18 discharge without using the trigger.

Not impressive... Marines are gun hogs...
Opinion,untempered by fact,is ignorance.

Nobody is impervious to accidents.... they happen, yeah that drop could have been prevented but glad it didn't fail the inadvertent drop test and you didn't get injured.
If someone states they've never done anything remotely stupid or accidental with a firearm they lying...

Wait, wait, wait; there is a huge difference between an accident in private and a moment of stupid that endangers others.

This story is the prior, I have seen far too many examples of the latter to be quite so dismissive about it.

If you lower the bar and say "everyone does this, no biggie", you relax standards that minimize this.

I understand the intent, but so stress that these things can be and have been lethal accidents.

agree..... with this statement

I don't think BF would have been that lacks on firearm control had others been around.  We typically all get more slack when its just us because we lower our self responsibility... not saying we should but I happens.  When others are around I always use more than standard precaution if a weapons around.... just plain and simple.

I agree as well these little incidents can be lethal... but I again will dare say most all have had some sort of goof in private before that came from complacency and not the best thinking.

You might be funnin' with BF here but come on.... Its Beltfed, if I do get a chance to meet him I want him to be armed, hopefully with something that makes him live up to his name and we can have some fun Bucky

Met Bf and the Mrs. at a store opening in Kentucky a few years ago. Not sure if he was “ packin’ “ or not.
Really enjoyed our visit.

It is the same when you are stupid.

Okay, let's get back on topic. I like the Sig P320 series, especially the M17/18 and X variants. One of the concerns was the drop issue the older P320 series had or has, and rather the upgrade really solved the problem. from experience, I am satisfied that it is, but I DO NOT want to ever repeat the experience in any way.
By the way, this was the same pistol I shot the coyote, and a copperhead with.

Now let's get on with talking about the Marines wise choice in pistols.
