Awaiting delivery on Browning stainless A-Bolt in .338 Win Mag. which I plan to use on Elk and larger bear.

After paying for the rifle, I have a budget of $500-$750 to cover scope, bases and rings.

I've received great feedback here on past purchases and have gone from being 100% Leupold to purchasing Burris Signature Select, Zeiss Conquest and Bushnell Elite 4200.

How would you scope this setup, knowing that eye relief is important (I've worn too many battle scars over my eyebrow).

Also, I'm partial to the Burris dual dovetail rings with inserts, but have considered the new Talley one piece.

Thanks,

AJ

Nikon Gold Monarch within your  budget. I love my 2.5-10 X 56mm..... Very good at low light. The 2.5-10 X 50mm with BDC is my next purchase for long range hunting. If you want a titanium body scope to go with your A Bolt, look at the 5.5-16 X 44AO or the 3.3-10 X 44AO Nikon Monarch UCC. Good glass and differently within budget.

What range do you expect to use this gun at?  Presumably, it is not for long range shooitng, right?

Ilya,

I've never taken a shot (outside of sighting in), over 150 yards.

Best Regards,

John

Then I would suggest going with something of comparatively low magnification and with plenty of non-critical eye relief.  You are not shooting too far and your target is likely to be pretty substantial and potentially dangerous (bear).

Good options are Burris Signature Safari 1.75-5x32, Burris Signature Select 1.5-6x40 with Electro-Dot, Nikon Monarch Gold 1.5-6x42, IOR Valdada Hunting 1.1-4x26 CRT, Trijicon Accupoint 1.25-4x24.

If you want to save some money and keep things simple there are several small durable fixed magnification 4x32 scopes with thick reticle around that would really well for you.  My favourite out of those is IOR 4x32 with 4a reticle.

Ilya,

I don't know anything about IOR but their value proposition appears to be very high, and worth consideration.

Thanks for your time, I appreciate it.

best Regards,

John

I am probably the biggest proponent of IOR on this forum.  I think they have an excellent product and the customer service that used to be horrible has improved.  My personal choices for your setup would be either a 4x32 IOR or Burris Signature Safari 1.75-5x32, but any of the scopes above would work well.

And you will be, grasshopper, once you are fully cured of your debilitating nikonitis.

What's an "average" shot for elk like where you hunt??

Yardage wise??

I was told in N. New Mexico that it was anywhere between 100-250 yards. I'm a total elk hunting novice.

I saw a couple of videos our guide had that had shots on elk at over 300 yards. One at 360 plus yards.

Unfortunately, I saw a lot of missed shots by half assed hunters at those ranges as well.....

If at first you don't secede...try..try again.

The Zeiss Conquest line has good eye relief.
